What sampler to choose?
« on: December 07, 2007, 02:53:12 PM »
I'm on the hunt for a sampler, not really important in what form or what type of connection- beit an external box which connects via a cable, or one of these little boxes that plug directly into the parallel port (like the MegaloSound, or DSS8+), or maybe the pcmcia on the A1200 or A600.

For simple sampling (8 bit, 44KHz, stereo), what sampler would you recommend (with soundquality more important than bitrates)? And what software is the most easy-to-use for these kind of samplers?

I've used a Megalosound sampler for years. the sound quality is not the best. Its always sounded a little "tinney".

Its rock solid though. I abused it pretty bad. Its been overloaded and stepped on and it still works.

the software that comes with it will not open on workbench. I've tried every mode promoter with no luck.

It also is supported by soundprobe. thats what I use most of the time. I dont think you can buy it anywhere though?

I still use a Megalosound... I often don't bother to sample above 32khz as the dynamic range is so lame on 8bits that you'll not hear anything over that... You then smother the output in analogue or 24bit reverb to smooth it all out :-)

I've used a Trilogic MKII Stereo Sampler for many years. Plugs straight into the parallel port and has a built-in volume control. I'd recommend AudioMaster IV for the sampling software. Easy to use with plenty of options including realtime effects.

Plus a few more...

I get great results (I think) with DSS8+.  If you're interested, VoiceOfAmiga.lha on Aminet was made with it.  Grin.
