Title: What was the last Know RPG released or going to be released. .
Post by: Edpon on October 17, 2005, 07:16:46 AM
. . For the Amiga, any OS, Disk or CD. I'm trying to track down if there was a recent RPG made for the Amiga. Also, what RPG's are worth getting for the Amiga, again, any format or OS will be fine, as long as it's for an Amiga. Thanks.

Ed

Evils doom, from Olympia software. It got released, but it didnt get a good publisher (I think you had to order from the developers...)

It is very nice RPG, using the style from Eye of the beholder but with much better gfx and music/sound..

Search for it!

Do open source RPGs count?

There are ADOM, Angband + variants, Nethack...

The last known RPG for the Amiga was Total Chaos AGA: Battle at the Frontier of Time which was released last in April 2004.

It is a Strategy RPG which requires OS 3.0+, 64 MB HD space, 16 MB ram, AGA.  It will run on any CPU but it will make full use of a 68060 if you have it.

It is a Real Amiga(tm) game, not a port.

Total Chaos is my favourite strategy game of all time.

It hurts my hardcore Amiga heart
that some amiga ppl doesnt even want to try it.

Although not the last to be finished Ambermoon (http://hol.abime.net/3256/screenshot) was quite late to be released (in English) at 1998 (Originally written in 1992/3)

You can download the English version from my website.

Texturemapped 3D on an A500, surely not? ;)

It merits mentioning that there was an attempt or at least discussion of an attempt to port the open-source Baldur's Gate datafile-reading engine over to the Amiga.  That was a worthy series (if a little too easy in places, esp. once you got the right spell combos).

I can't recall if it was here or over at amigaworld.net, but it might be worth tracking down and finding out the status of.

There is no Total Chaos (Heavy) AGA.

ChaosHeavy.lha is for the Amiga 500/2000/3000.
It has LORES OCS 64 color gfx.

TotalChaosAGA.lha is completely different.
It is for the Amiga 1200/4000 and has AGA 256 color HIRES gfx.

Hmmm.. yes.. A500 gfx are primitive, try to not play
the 1980's version and instead get a newer one.

And if the gfx are so awful then -why- did you download it?

Don't bother unless you download at least a 1990s version. :-D

TotalChaosAGA features a much better user interface
than the ancient ChaosHeavy so it is more fun than all the old ECS versions.

Does Total Chaos AGA also work with CGX screenmodes?

It's a pure AGA game which bangs the AGA circuits directly.

Just when you think it´s safe to leave AGA,along comes Total Chaos AGA!

it's handy to have a gfx card like Cybervision 64 which has a built in monitor switcher for these games  :-P
I wish I could convert my A4000D to a monster mediator PCI machine but good old AGA keeps me from it  :boohoo:

Total Chaos is written for AmigaOS not CGX OS.
Total Chaos uses AmigaOS Screenmodes.

IF CGX OS was compatible with AmigaOS then the answer would be: Yes.

Since CGX OS is very incompatible with AmigaOS the answer is: NO

ROFL!!!! That's freakin hilarious!!!!  :roflmao:

I don't even know how to bang the AGA circuits directly.

I just use OpenScreenTags(blah blah...)
etc. from the OS.

Total Chaos AGA is a pure AmigaOS game and uses
graphics.library, intuition.library, exec.library etc. etc.

AmigaOS Rulez!!!!

I looked at the screen shots of Total Chaos and did not think I would like it, but will download it and give it a look some time soon.  I am a big fan of the old Gold Box D&D games like Pool of Radiance, Curse of the Azure Bonds, Secret of the Silver Blades and Pools of Darkness and UFO Enemy Unknown is one of my all time favorites.  I would like to write a Gold Box style D&D game using the UFO game engine and game play.  Would that qualify as a RPG?

Hi ChaosLord!

I tried your game TotalChaos AGA on AmigaOS 4. I get a warning "Can't open screen". I wonder what kind of screen the game wants to open. Also, does it use the CIA chip in any way, I get also warning about this.

Any help would be appreciated...

I wonder what kind of screen the game wants to open.

It wants to open several parent/child screens.
The main one is 640x512x8.
There is also a 640x1024 SA_AUTOSCROLL screen.
blah blah blah...

Also, does it use the CIA chip in any way, I get also warning about this.

I use ciaa.resource or ciab.resource for a timer to play the mods.  I don't know any other proper way to play mods on OS 1.0 to 3.9

I doubt any of this was any real help to you.  :-)

If you want actual useful help just send me a working AmigaOne and I'll start the laborious process of porting the game over.  After that... 1280x1024x32bit gfx here we come!!!!

ChaosLord:

Ok. Well I try to pass this info forward, maybe there is some reason why screen doesn't open :) Feel free to give me more detailed info!

Could you make modplaying optional (or is it already?). Using CIA is banging hardware...There are other ways but you may need to replace the player then.

No and no.
Great RPGs require good music.

Please send me a player that magically plays medmods accurately without a timing pulse from a timer chip and I will use it.

It must support 0-64 channels playback just as Total Chaos medplay routine has been doing for years.

Thanx for the assist! :-)

It's your lucky day ;) I have a MED player that doesn't use CIA. Only problem is that it is not optimized and it's beta. It's also tested only on A1 currently...it uses AHI, not audio.device btw.

1. WAHOOO!!!!! :-D

2. When playing a typical 4 channel MMD1 MedMod what % of CPU time does it burn?

Hi again Mr Chaos :)

My favourite ProTracker MOD Soulfree takes ~2%. Some converted multichannel s3ms eat more.

MMD2/3 with many command pages may be even hungry.

I have done some comparison with mikmod (SDL_mixer) and mikmod is faster currently.

argh, I remember finishing the curse and secret with the same characters ... I realised that I should get a life when I was somewhere in the middle of pools of darkness. But hey, it was very a good chance to improve my English (maybe I need to play more ?) I still have my pools of darkness disks somewhere, and my last save was still working when I checked last year. I better move it to hd.

the UFO enemy unknown is definitely not a RPG, as someone stated before, but I think the combat engine in UFO can be adapted to a gold box style game, and it would qualify as a RPG (even games like diablo qualify as rpg these days). But practically it's nearly impossible, I'm not sure if microprose will be willing to give their sources to you (I'm not even sure if microprose still exists) and you would need to spend lots of time to make "gold box" era graphics for the engine (I mean like castles, forests, dragons, fireballs etc.). hmm, when I think about it, maybe it's possible if you have enough devotion. but still it would be very demanding project.

@ Countzero,

Yes, you are exactly right, I was thinking of the combat portion of UFO in a "Gold Box" AD&D style.  I think it could be done fairly easily and well if the source for each was available and a small group of enthusiastic player/programmers/artists could be found to work on it.  It would definitely be just for fun (hopefully) as I don't think it would make any money if offered for sale.  I have one great artist that might be interested in doing the full screen stuff and some of the characters, she is very young and does not have a full time job yet.  Almost anyone could do the small graphics for scenery blocks, weapons and other items. If I could find the sources and a few programmers to help me, I think it would be possible.  In fact on the PC there was a last installment of the Gold Box style called Forgotten Realms Unlimited Adventures, which was an editor/game creator that was very popular.  Check the Web for FRUA and you will still see many sites listed.  Many of those sites probably have most of the graphics needed that could be used or converted for use, which would save a lot of time and effort.

By the way, your English seems perfect to me, playing those games must have worked!   :-D

Can i play Total chaos with other players on the internet?
Title: Re: What was the last Know RPG released or going to be released. .

Greetings Professor Capehill  :-)

If you will send me a working 68k .library or .o or .lib that I can slink with SASC then I will use it for experiments on 68060 and UAE.

I will also need a working native OS4 .library so my Total Chaos 68060 code can open the native PPC .library (when running on PPC OS4) and play medmods with little CPU strain.

Then my code will do:
Code: [Select]
[size=medium]
// Note to Wayne: size command is broken in code mode

IF (OS3) THEN
   PlayModsUsingCIA();
ELSE_IF (OS4) THEN
   OpenTheNativePPCMedReplayLibraryAndUseIt();
END_IF

Maybe then we can set
OS4_RPGs = OS4_RPGs+1;  :-)

Does your secret replay routine have the same commands
and interface as the SDL library for ez porting?

p.s. I need subsongs to work, which should be no problem.

It can do play by email via YAM and an Arexx script.
But I assume you are asking about "Live over the internet with direct TCP/IP connection and chatting."

Please choose the answer you like best:

A: Yes as soon as I code that in.

B: No because the "awfull" graphics could blind you or perhaps even kill you if you played it online.  The Amiga community would collapse at the loss of another user.

C: No because my Graphics Animatographer got depressed and deleted all his anims after reading your awfull comment; and I haven't heard from him since.  So it will take me years to improve all the gfx by myself which leaves no time for coding internet routines.

2. If I were to code in the Play over the internet feature next week would you help me test it?

Just installed Eye of the Beholder 2: Darkmoon and must say it's pretty good....a definite improvement on the original.  The cut scenes with interactive figures are better and more numerous, and it's harder!!  Now, I have to see if I can get Knightmare installed on my harddrive.  Anyone know if there's a WHDLoad module for it?

Hired Guns also gets a vote for one of the best rpg's around!

I tried the WHDLoad install for Knightmare.  It installs the two disks okay, but it won't open...gives an error before you see the complete 'Mindscape' logo screen.  I tried it on an A500 68000 7MHz and an A2000 68030 40MHz.  No go on either...curses!  Chaos Engine works great though, that's an awesome game!
