Just a piece of advice about Blizzard A1230 IV...
« on: February 23, 2003, 11:54:07 AM »
I work in a local tv station and among other Amigas (5x A2000) we also use 3x A1200. One of them has a Blizzard 1230 IV with 68882 (50 Mhz) fpu and 16 MB of RAM.
In 1998 it had been through an "over-voltage" caused by a malfunction of the central power distribution section of the tv station (caused by a lightning that hit on the broadcast tower).
IT WAS 1 OF THE 3 MACHINES THAT SURVIVED THAT DAY !!! (the other 2 where an A2000 and a Thomson TV monitor)
With a bit of a problem though...
The Blizard 1230 IV showed a serious onerheating problem. After a minute in use (AT BEST!) would "freeze" the A1200.
In that time we needed the A1200 to work for about 5 days. So, i "lift" the Amiga about 5 cm from its desk and hooked a 12V fan cooler exactly under the Blizzard.
Worked fine!
The reason that i am posting this after 5 years is really unbelievable.
AFTER 5 YEARS OF 24 HOURS PER DAY THIS AMIGA IS STILL WORKING PERFECTLY USING THE SAME "TRICK". WE NEVER TURNED THAT A1200 OFF DURING THESE 5 YEARS AND STILL ROCKS!

I strongly advise you to do the same thing even if you have a tower amiga. It really makes them live longer!

If you want I can post a picture of it...

Thats Amazing!!!!

5 years!.

I highly recommend fans, i have upgraded my A4000T fan with a ThermalTake, its noisy but it works.
I also ordered some fans from the USA, they do PowerPC fans and Voodoo Card Fans.
As i know that my PowerPC fan is not realiable and cannot trust it.

If anyone else wants to stop the machines from frying, then order a fan.

My computer is bristling with fans, though at this very moment a few of them aren`t plugged it. Thats one of my next little tasks. Though its been running topless for ages.

Strange problem that. Whats it do? Why is it on all the time?

Yea, thats the problem with computer "freaks".
We spend hundreds and hundreds of euros in processors, memory modules, etc. and never had the brain to think that IT NEEDS TO BE COOL!!!

I hope that one day this will change.
No, i don't expect everybody to understand the need of a cooler fan, but I hope that one day, processors will be built without the need of one... :-D

Yes but what do that Amigas do exactly? Surely there not there to just add some class? :-)

Cool! (no pun intended)

I intend to get my Blizzard 030 Mk IV as far past the 60Mhz its at now as soon as I have time to play.

As long as I can find out which component can't handle the higher speeds then I can replace it and get the speed up I'm thinking.  May need a couple of 80mm fans on the job too.  :-D
Restraining orders are just another way of saying I love you!

Are all A1200 trapdoor devices designed so badly that they overheat? I have an accelerator card in my a1200 trapdoor. I had to melt off the trapdoor "pillars" just to get the door back on with the accelerator in place, and there's still a bulge. Besides which, I had to remove the door completely and prop the entire A1200 upon 4 milk jug caps in order to prevent overheating lockup problems. I guess when they designed those things, they had naked systems as well, and forgot about the non-fanned-ness of the a1200.

And here I was thinking it was only me with that problem. :-)

They are commonly used for genlock purposes.
But they displaydifficult graphics in 720x576 fully animated with text etc.
Its not an easy work!
If that was easy we could put a PC there...
Oh, I forgot to mention that this A1200 does all the "Render / conversion / design" work for the other amigas... :-P
