For the original poster, you should probably try to find out which games your son is most interested in. If most of the games are available on both platforms though, then you still have a quandry.

For myself I got a 360, mostly because so far only one or two games have cropped up on the PS3 that I'm even vaguely interested in, aside from games that are also available on the 360. Plus, not one single other gamer I know has a PS3, so not sure who I would multiplayer with if I had gotten one! I've never been sitting around thinking: gee I wish I had gotten a PS3.

Quote
I have also been thinking xbox 360, but now I doubt.
Because of the red ring of death, which seems to occur quite often. Also, many xbox games will be released on the ps3 sooner or later.
Just the technical problems make me doubt.

FWIW, Microsoft has finally admitted that this is a real problem and it affects every 360 that was made, at least up to a certain date. Google around for details, MS claims to have fixed the problem and newer 360s should be okay. I myself have a 360 which could be affected by the red ring at anytime, which doesn't make me happy but at least now that MS admits that it is their problem I'll be able to get it fixed if it ever occurs. BTW, I've had my 360 for over a year now with no problems.

I am really surprised on alot of the posts here. I remember before the release of the 360, most were sure that the PS3 was going to be a success.

But I will not get into detail how many promises Sony broke.  Amiga Inc. does the same trait.  :-D

Xbox 360 will give you more of a greater gaming experience no doubt.  Xbox Live makes it really good if you ever wanted to go online and play some great games.  If your not even into playing games online, kick it over to Xbox live arcade.  :-D

As far as reliability, people seem to have ran into the 3 rings of death.  My brother has had his xbox since January of 2006, and the xbox still works like a charm, and he plays it alot since the release of Halo 3.  :-)  So to be sure, just make sure you got warranty on the 360, I thought some had a 1-2 year warranty.

As far as graphics, 360 does them amazing.  PS3 was by any means not impressive. Heck, I remember playing that offroad game on the ps3, and the first thing I noticed was the flat polygon people and the two polygon grass lol, and I didnt even go in to play and pick out the small things, it was that noticeable.  PS3's online experience is dull. I remember their claim to be better then Xbox Live! lol. Its been many months, nothing yet.  :-)

Lazy programmers or not, its probably hard to make games for the thing. I remember when Metal Gear Solid 4 was suppose to be a ps3 only exclusive, and a year later, already going to be chance for a 360 release.  :-)

But anyways, My vote is strictly 360. Unless you want a barbecue grill, buy the ps3.

Im no hardcore gamer but its quite obvious PS3 is the new Sega Saturn. Avoid Avoid Avoid unless you are a gaming dork who plays games in japanese to get the 'pure hart-core gaming experience' even though u dont know any japanese language.

I have the Wii60 combo (Wii+Xbox 360). This is cheaper then just a PS3.. That was the selling point for me.

Hell the lowend 360 (Arcade modell,256mb memcard,HDMI) is even cheaper then the Wii now.

I think i will buy a PS3 in the future if the price goes down and there is some games that i want to play. Right now there isnt a single PS3 exclusive game that i want to play :( and i will never buy a PS3 if i cant get one that plays PS2 games. (never owned a PS2 and would like to play some of the games on that console.. But i dont want YET another console under my TV)

Xbox 360 hands down.  Sorry but Halo3 Rocks and games for it are way more than PS3.

Hardware wise, the two are probably pretty evenly matched. In theory, the PS3 has a more powerful CPU, but taking advantage of the extra power in the context of a game seems to be challenging. The 360 has a more modern GPU design (unified shader architecture), but seems to be similar in terms of raw power to the one in the PS3. The memory structure on the 360 is a bit more developer friendly.

So far the storage difference doesn't seem to have been a huge deal. There are quite a few games on the PS3 that are bigger than the 8 or 9 GB that will fit on a single DVD, but it's unclear how much of that is out of necessity and how much out of using less compression. So far the only games that have spanned multiple discs on the 360 had excessive amounts of pre-rendered video (something that has gotten less common now that in-engine cut scenes no longer look like crap).

Cross-platform games tend to look about the same graphically so far, but at the moment the 360 has a much better selection of good games than the PS3. Unless Sony pulls off a miracle this Christmas, I expect this trend will continue.

As far as value for your dollar is concerned, it largely depends on what's valuable to you. If you're primary interested in a gaming machine, it's hard to beat the new bundles that are coming out (may already be out, not sure) for the holiday season. There's the Arcade Bundle at $280 (only $30 more than the Wii) which comes with a 256MB memory card and 5 Live Arcade games (smaller games normally sold through the XBox Live Marketplace for $5-$15), though there seems to be some confusion as to whether or not these are full versions or demos. Then there's the Pro which comes with a 20GB HD, Forza 2 and Marvel Ultimate Alliance for $350.

The $400 PS3 is finally within striking distance of the 360 Premium/Pro. The complete lack of PS2 compatability is definately a minus for the sytem, but if you want a Blu-Ray player it's a good deal assuming there are games you want for the PS3.

As far as video playback is concerned, the PS3 supports more formats, but the 360's support is less anemic than it used to be. The 360 currently supports h.264, MPEG4 (but not DivX), and WMV formats.

Reliability has been a big issue on the 360 until recently. Seems there was a design flaw which resulted in a large percentage of units overheating usually resulting in the dreaded "Red Ring of Death." It would appear that this has been fixed in newer 360s, but no one will be 100% sure until these units have been around for a while. The good news is that the warranty for RRoD issues is now 3 years and 1 year for all other issues. If your console breaks, total turn-around time from when you call tech support to getting a new console is about a month with no shipping costs passed on to you (Microsoft ships you a pre-paid shipping box to send your broken unit in).

My vote would be for the 360.

Disclaimer: I am the owner of a 360. My 360 broke under warranty and was replaced.

Ahhh, I finally have proof that people here dont get out much.  At least here in USA.

Here in USA PS3 is killng the X-Box 360.   its no argument that the PS3 (Not because its winning) has more going for it.

it has PS3, PS2, and PS1 games for starters.   I know you said   "what if it didnt have Blue Ray"  but it does!  and its got freakin UBUNTU Linux and Yellow Dog (Nuff Freakin said")

PS3 is the NEW AMIGA!  this is going to be my replacement once I seel my AMiga stuff...........that is unles PS4 comes out by that time.

X-Box has a Few Extra good games yes..........but there are so many more for the PS3..........I mean heck............its practically what the Amiga was back in its day..........a Full Multimedia device.

Im always one to want ONE device that does everything so that I dont need 5 seperate units lying around my house. isnt his why we now buy LCD screens? because we dont want the clutter?  well I dont want some stupid HD-DVD crap hanging out of my X-Box if I had a choice.  Its like what the SX-1 is the the SX32 on the CD32.

WHen you get a PS3 and see it in action when you pop in a Digital Camera memory card and it does the slide show.........you will be hooked. Its presentation is nice.................You should see how COOL Lemmings is for the PS3!

PS3 has a brighter future than X-Box. And BlueRay is beating HD-DVD here in USA

CD32 is actually the best Amiga ever made by Commodore!...

PS3 beating 360 in the USA???

I dont know, but everyone I know either has a Wii or a Xbox 360.  About 1 friend I know owns a PS3, and he is playing his friend's xbox 360 most of the time.

BluRay is not that popular either.  I dont know a single person owning BluRay movies.  Most still buy plain DVDs anyways.

I like to think BluRay as Beta and DVD as VHS as far as comparing the popularity.  :-D

I about died laughing when I seen in Walmart when the PS3 was showing how superior a Bluray movie looked compared to a DVD

Yea, have them compare it to a HD-DVD, then there would be no difference.

But anyways, in the longer run, you will be happier with the quality of online play and game library.  Even if you chose PS3, good luck.  I havent heard much action for that side of the game. I would rather play a Playstation 1 since alot of awsome games were made for that.

You obviously haven't been paying attention to the NPD sales numbers. In the US, the 360 has had a substantial lead over the PS3 in units sold every month since the PS3 has been released and has a huge advantage in installed base both because of the larger sales while they were both on the market and the head start.

Not the new $400 40GB version. Backwards compatability has been removed to cut costs (though the more expensive 60 and 80GB versions still have this).

I'm not sure exactly who you're referring to here so feel free to ignore this if it's not me, but I never said anything about "what if it didn't have blu-ray." Not everyone cares about blu-ray and if you don't, it doesn't really add much to the perceived value of the system.

But the GPU can't be used from Linux.

Err, like what? There are a few decent exclusives out like Heavenly Sword and Resistance, but nothing I would consider a must have. Meanwhile there are a bunch of great games that are either 360 exclusive or 360 and PC only like Gears of War, Crackdown, Dead Rising, Bioshock, Halo 3, Eternal Sonata etc.

My 360 does a nice little slideshow with my digital camera too, though I can't compare the presentation between it and the PS3 since I haven't seen the PS3's slideshow capabilities.

I think I'll wait until the winner is clearer. Sales for both combined are still an insignificant drop in the bucket compared to DVD

I don't know about the us but in the uk the xbox 360 has a far wider and larger range of games and the xbox 360 is far outselling the ps3.In the uk we now get 3 years warranty on a new xbox which if i was buying a console would sway me towards the 360 .One of my workmates bought a ps3 and tried to get his money back the following day but because he opened the box they would only offer him 200 pound so he is keeping it, I am not sure why he wanted to get his money back but it could be because he likes driving games and not shoot em ups or fps style games .More choice on the games front might be better for your son though I am not an expert on consoles i like my pc .
I once had an amigaone xe but sold it .

Without taking sides wheter xb or ps is better, I will stay neutral and say Wii seems to suck big time. Crappy games, crappy looking games, controllers are kids toys (made of hardened foam with nothing inside?). And on top of that, the most important thing: how GAY you look playing wii-games :-/

I have all the major consoles, so my advice (if you only can buy one) is.
Take the 15 most interesting games that you can find, then look at what you need to play them.
My current favourite console is the Nintendo DS. Last console games i enjoyed was Zelda Twilight Princess,God Of War 2,Super Paper Mario.
Currently playing Half Life episode 2.

Long story short, buy games first, then what you need later.
