New Amithlon kernels
« on: July 30, 2003, 07:35:02 AM »
Amigabest have recently posted 3 new Amithlon kernels with support for Eden chipsets and S3 and GF4 graphics cards. The question is, who has done this? The archives contain no docs, and the site itself makes no mention of where they have come from.

Is it possible for a competent Linux coder to use the source on the CD to whip up a modified kernel, if so would someone please build a kernel that supports the ATI All-in-Wonder Radeon please?

The guy who did those is on the amithlon list.. You can search the archives at yahoogroups.

As usual, the AmigaBest site causes more problems than it solves. STAY AWAY FROM IT!!  (Seriously, it's a perfect example of the sort of semi-legal download site that should be eradicated)

The kernels in question are test kernels, specially the Eden one. The person doing them is indeed trying to add support for more hardware, and he is on all the Amithlon lists, but these are not even "unofficial" releases, and should not have been made available for download on a public site.

If AmigaBest didn't completely ignore licensing terms, you should be able to find the kernel sources there too.

I'm responsible for the GF4-supporting kernel. The reason there are no docs with it is, as Bill says, that it's a test kernel that was really only intended for distribution to a few people on the Amithlon mailing list.

I'm disapointed and not a little bit peeved that AmigaBest has made it available, but the kernel is under the GPL so there's not much I can do about it.    :-(

As for Radeon support,  I'm working on that but the Radeon frame-buffer device in the kernel does not play well with Amithlon so there is no guarantee it will ever work.

If you're interested in new kernels I'd strongly suggest that you subscribe the to the Amithlon, AmithlonOpen and AmithlonDev lists on Yahoo Groups. New information always shows up there first.

I'm responsible for the S3Savage and eden kernels, but due to amigabest taking files and repackaging them with no credit  and taking content from my page without notifying me. I've shut my page down until futher notice.

Sorry Gary, I whould have said "persons" working on these kernels.

If, as I suspect, AmigaBest do not also distribute the source code  you are perfectly entitled to ask them to remove the files because they are not complying with the GPL.

Due to discussion with Ber*, Amithlon will most likely never work on eden boards due to the cpu's missing the PSE/PAE cpu flags. Unless some veteran kernel hacker can get it to work without the PSE/PAE flags. I'm still working on the kernels in my spare time. I will eventually reopen my site.

@Paul & Gary,

Keep up the good work guys. I'm sure everyone appreciates your efforts whatever the results.  Don't let one irresponsible website put you off.

I have a feeling whoever runs that site isn't going to pay the slightest attention to the terms of the GPL. They seem to have little respect for either the word or, more importantly, the spirit of any license agreement.

After downloading my kernel from AmigaBest I've noticed that not content with posting it without consulting me or giving me credit , they've also gone as far as renaming the actual kernel file (which has the side-effect of breaking the launcher script).

Idiots  :-(

Gary,

I agree, it pissed me of to see it on a site. These are development kernels and to see them repackaged and such has made me not happy.

I was planning on releasing another one but until I recieve an email from the owner of the page. And also if he is gonna post them on his page I think he shouldn't repackage them, the filenames should remain intact.

oh well  :-?

Maybe you could help with the GFX Card specific drivers for AROS?

GeForce and Radion would be great!!!!
