There was a thread here a few days ago on attaching
devices to the A1000 in the hardware forum.
If you have a few extra bucks to spare, there are a
number of things you can do with the A1k and not destroy
the machine.
Check it out.

I think that is correct.  But if memory serves me correctly, since the two were on different sides (A500 on left and A1000 on right) you had to physically face the unit backward to connect it to the A1000.  There was also a height difference I believe, which made it require some props underneath to support it.
