ADF's on a real AMIGA? LHA's to an AMIGA , HOW?
« on: December 18, 2002, 09:49:14 AM »
 I know questions from a newbie are frustrating for you Amiga pro's but please help me;

ADF's, can they be converted to be put on a floppy and run on an real AMIGA ?:-? (i heard something about a programme called OPUS???)

LHA's are zipped up AMIGA files right? if i download then from the net on a PC, how do i get them on a real AMIGA? :-?

I downloded some games for a Hard Disk labled "WHLOAD",whats that all about?

Detailed help would be sooo greatly appreciated :-)

Firstly we need to know what model of Amiga and OS version you are using and does it have a harddisc and how much memory does it have.

If you have a 1/2 or 1 Meg A500 getting ADFS back to real disk is going to be very difficult and a second or third disk drive is really needed.
Boot Workbench 1.3 in DF0:
720K PC disk in DF1:
Blank disk in DF2: to uncompress the image onto

An uncompressed ADF is 880K a PC disk that a standard Amiga can read is 720K I guess you see the problem here already.
So you have to compress the adf image to get it under 720K. Use LHA for MSDOS

On your Amiga you'll need CrossDos or MessyDOS to read a PC formated Disk.

You'll need adf2disk to convert it back

Directory OPUS is a file manager it can be configured with scripts to do a lot of things automatically.

WHDLOAD is a system where by NDOS Amiga games can be installed on to a Harddisc. Usually these disks (Games Mostly) have a custom bootblock and are not readable by the operating system.

Its not possible to turn an adf back into a disk in a regular PC. PC's cannot write 880K disks**

** there are various hacks available or specialist hardware you can buy for your PC.

ADFs (Amiga Disk Format) are exact images taken from a real floppy,
and they can esily be written back, but only using a real Amiga.
I use a program called TransADF to do this.  It's on Aminet.

LHA is a form of compression, similar to ZIP, TGZ, GZIP, etc, but not
compatible.  It's commonly used on the Amiga, but can be used on other
platforms.
EMail me direct for copies of both Amiga and MSDOS executables of LHA.

WHDload is a utility for running older games from your hard drive
which were designed to run from floppy only.  You need the correct
"module" for each particular game, and there are thousands of these
available on Aminet.

Anthony.

I'll leave some questions for the real experts...

ADF are Amiga disk volumes, you can unpack them on amiga using one of the ADF->disk utilities.

I've heared about adfblitzer (it's listed)- myself i use ADF2DISK check this page of aminet.org:  Aminet - adf search

**
As for LHA see it as ZIP or any other type of compression.
(except the 1001 little differences)
Transfer... by disk or link. There are a lot of treads covering this-search around.

Floppy is the most basic, else you get the (slow) serial connection, or you can splash out with a Ethernetcard and start a network.

**
Darn, i'm pressed with time  :-(

**
WHDload is a program for running disk-based games from your HD. It's designed for games that have no standard installer included.
It's a type of support program that allows the installed program to run of your HD.
You need to install the package-tehn you can run the games.
Aminet - whdload search

So i'd say - download WHDload program, install it and keep your fingers crossed ;-)

**

That's as far as i know about it.
I'm off making some stupid movie here at school and i'm already late - my friends will be ***sed off by now.

I hope this covers the basics- i'm going offline.
Time for the experts ;-)  to move in  :-D

Gaaah!
Don't use LHA!
Use RAR as it can use multiple volumes and have a higher compression ratio!
On the other hand that would be slow on a stock A1200 and multiple volumes won't work without a hard drive ( unless you have 3+ MB RAM, but if you have that, you will generally have a HD aswell... :-D )
