What do you mean by broadband?

Personally I have had all my amigas on ethernet since 1995 or so, and there is yet DSL avaible that is any quicker anyways.

PPC is the only way the Amiga can go, commercially. There's no money in selling PCs.

yes, classic Amigas can do broadband, the NIC cards are expensive, 100-150 USD

I would not recomend buying a classic Amiga to expand the hell out of at this point, it is NOT cost effective. If you want to play games mainly buy an old or new Amiga 500. If you want web surfing and all the modern conviences either wait for OS4, or pick up a Pegasos/MOS now.

To answer the question about broadband on a classic Amiga sure it can, my A3000 was hooked to a DSL connection. Cable modem can be done also without a PC, but the cable modem itself should be an external ethernet. Some new model cable modems are routers in and of themselves, otherwise you will want to have a router also. Now you must consider what the Amiga itself needs. at bare minimum I'd say a 020 accelerator, etheernet card and TCP/IP software like Miami(not available) or Genesi that comes with OS3.9. ideally you would want at bare minimum a 68060 with 128Meg RAM, ZIII or PCI gfx card and other upgrades. Websurfing on a slouchy slow OCS/ECS/AGA Amiga is no fun!

So really once you purchase a second hand big box Amiga (or frankenstein A1200) and upgrade the hell out of it to get it modern you have dropped >$1000 easy. Just my opinion, your mileage may vary. If you do go the classic route, Elbox has some neat hardware. There are really too many options out there, Amigaforever for the PC is a neat bandaid option.

If you are interested in a  new A500 look here (http://cgi6.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewSellersOtherItems&userid=redrumloa&include=0&since=-1&sort=3&rows=50).

If you are interested in Pegasos/MOS look here (http://www.pegasosppc.com) and here (http://www.morphos.net).

Depends on different factors for sure, but faster than any real Amiga for sure hands down.

how fast is the boot times

My system a cold boot is probably ~10 seconds, mostly the bios initializing. Warm boot is ~3 seconds.

I don't get your question:-? winuae is for Windows, therefore it won't run on MorphOS. There is a version of UAE for MorphOS though. I havn't tried it yet.

amigauser17:

With MorphOS there is very little need to use UAE, except for nasty hardware hitting old applications.  There is a UAE for MorphOS, but you'll find most applications either have a MorphOS port or run very well under JIT of the 68k.  For instance, IBrowse, FinalWriter, and ImageFX work lightning fast under JIT.  Amiga apps that have become MorphOS apps include fxPaint, Voyager, YAM, and fxScan.

(the JIT of the 68k is invisible, and every application including the 68k ones effectivly run as native applications to MorphOS)

Let's make things even more complicated for you. Another option is Amithllon, an Amiga emulator based on a Linux kernal that runs on a pc without Windows. Once installed the pc boots up and you get into Amiga workbench and have the benefit of cheap pc hardware. Pro is the megaspeed and option for huge memory, con is the small choice of hardware you can use (gfx card, soundcard, networkcard), but once you've sorted it out it works great. Mega-con : no A500 or A1200 native Pal support. Amithlon only works with software that is also desiged to work with gfx cards under Picasso96. Programs that rely on Cybergrafix software won't work ....

probably a little too one-sided for AO ;-)

Wait till AmigaOS4 is out. Then decide from there.

@Effy

I have Amithlon here too! :-)  How about another "wait for", the Amiga ColdFire project.  The TRUE successor to the 68k family is being worked on as an accelerator for classic Amiga's.  How cool is that?  Check out the ColdFire (http://www.cdtv.org.uk/coldfire/)'s webpage :-)

Oh yeah, and for the geeks who can afford it, I suggest to purchase all of the above!!  Oh yeah!  OS4, MorphOS, OS3.x on ColdFire, and Amithlon!!  Yeah!

what do u want amigauser...i saw u changed your mind from classic to pegasos in some emu questions/answers... heh...

i want os4 , not morphos ..many reasons to that.

but sure emulators is bonuses for the people, but for me the os count the most.

btw....morphos is a way to go, but remeber os4 will not work on it , os 4 is for amigaone or classic PPC's ...

its your choice , either wait abit or....jump on it now...., i have been on here since 1985, i dont want to throw it all away... :)

I use AmigaOne everyday from 2 month ago and its a very fine product, I have Debian Linux and run UAE on it, just for old good and very playable games!
Amiga Classics are so fun!
but I wait for AmigaOS 4.0
Im very happy and I just Love  my new AmigaOne G4 XE with 512 Mb ram and ATI Radeon 7000.
when OS 4.0 is here, you know its going to be a big welcome and rebirth of Amiga party! with much alcoholic! jiiihaaa

The Linux in/under Amithlon is colpletly invisible (until you mess around with some
start-up-commands, and get all those text messeages before you get into AOS ;) ).

You won't notice it except for the rarther lond cold-boot (warm boot is extremly fast).

UAE on PPC is quite slow (*) and only really usable for old games.

(*) 68030@25mhz + very slow/old Z2-gfx-card is what it comes closest to atm.
(on CPUs <1ghz)
