Title: Amiga 600 that wont recognise hard disk! AAAAARRRRGGGHHH!!
Post by: zx6r6 on June 19, 2005, 08:01:35 PM
Right, thats it, I give up!! I've installed a 250 meg 2.5" hard disk in my newly aquired 600 and partitioned it etc with hard disk tools. The problem is that the system point blank refuses to aknowledge its there even after rebooting. It doesn't show anything in the early startup either. I'm running workbench 3.1, kickstart 2 v37.300. Is this a ROM issue?

Unfortunately the 2.05 roms in some A600s have limited or no hd support at all. Although My a600 had 37.300 roms and it worked fine with a 260Mb drive for a while then the drive failed and I replaced it with a 80Mb one. To this day I'm not sure if the drive was faulty or the roms didn't like it, I think it was the drive though.

Theres a little info here: http://www.gregdonner.org/workbench/wb_205.html

Thanks for your help.

Hmmm,

I have 37.300 and my 4GB (PC) harddrive has worked perfectly fine for the last year.

Not sure on make/model now.. if your interested I can find out. I didn't actually do any partitioning on my harddrive as the folks I bought it from had already done that for me :)

I'm only using Workbench 2 though.

Hmmmmm, from what I've read your drive shouldn't work! in view of the fact that yours does maybe there's a problem with my 600 or the hard disk. Is it possible that my hard drive is taking too long to spin up to be recognised by the os? It doesn't list it in the early startup menu. I've tried warm rebooting but doing this restarts the hard disk aswell and again it isnt shown in early startup.

Well, I got a 2.1 gb working in my A600 with 37.350 KS 2.0 Roms.  It wouldn't boot from it straight away, because it was too slow to boot straight up, but after a warm reset it would work.  You have to be very quick with the warm reset though, otherwise the hard drive will spin down and the A600 won't detect it.  Just tap the keys so it resets but the drive doesn't spin down and see whether that works.
You could also try getting KS 3.1 roms, they have a built in wait for hard drives, so it should work (assuming it's functional).  :-)

Still no good! Listening hard I think the floppy drive clicks just before the hard disk has finished its startup/reset procedure. Just ordered a cheap (£10) set of 3.1 roms on ebay, lets hope this cures it!

Thanks all!

To determin if it really is a spinup problem, you could always cut the red wire on the cable (Pin1).  The drive will no longer recieve the reset command.

What if you go into the kickstart menu and try to wait a bit before continuing to boot?

I second what Mad-Matt wrote. Try disabling pin1 on the ide cable (you can bend the pin out of the way).  I had a hell of a time with a 500Mb IBM drive until I did this. Also, make sure you set up the jumpers on pins 46-48 to set the 2.5" drive as master/single drive, etc.

I was leaning towards a Master/Slave jumper thing being the problem.  Often the drive can still be partitioned when jumpered incorrectly but won't boot afterwards.  :-D

I have an 810MB in my 600, but not sure of kickstart revision.   :pint:

My A600 with 37.300 ROMs didn't recognise a 420MB drive but worked after upgrading to 3.1 ROMs.

@zx6r6

How far do you get in the setup of the disk?  ie.  In HDToolbox, you Install, then Partition, then Save Changes?  After the reboot what happens?  Also, did you mean Workbench 2.1?  (Or, are you using SKICK to load a new kickstart?

FWIW, I have a 37.300 with a 2GB HD (formerly 4GB) and never any problem.  The GregDonner page is incorrect regarding the 40MB limit.

37.299 its the only one that doesn't have built-in scsi.device.

At last! :) 3.1 Rom turned up today and now the 600 hard drive works like a charm. Prior to rom fitting, after I cut pin 1 it worked after a reset so I it was a spin-up problem.

After having my first 'real' go on the 600 today I'm suprised at just how damn slow it is. Funny how my impression of speed has changed so much in the last 10+ years, I always remembered them (well, my 500) being reasonably zippy!
Wonder what a zx81 'feels' like now? gonna dig it out the loft tomorrow and give it a go! :)

cheers for suggestions all
