Title: I am making a movie. Looking for all video game experts.
Post by: BoingBoss on July 30, 2004, 11:37:32 PM
Hello to all my fellow Amiga fans,

I am in the process of making a movie about the History of Video Games.  It will be sold on DVD and VHS media.  I am looking for video game experts, like myself, to help with this project.  Here is what you do:

Hook up a VCR to your Amiga, Atari ST, PC, Nintendo 64, Sony Playstation, Super Nintendo, etc. and record yourself playing your favorite video games.  The recording MUST be in SP Mode.  I will also accept DVD recordings.  Next, carefully package your recorded game and mail it to me.  Include your REAL name so I may include it in the Movie credits.  Pmail me for shipping address and any questions.  Those of you that help me with this project will receive a FREE copy of the movie on DVD or VHS (your choice).

I am also looking for a sexy female voice to do some of the narrations in the movie.  I myself will be hosting the movie.

The game recordings that I am particularly interested in are the following:  Pong (the original Atari version), Ultima III (C64 version), Ultima VI (SNES version), Doom and Doom II (PC version), Vampire: The Masquerade Redemption (PC version), Gods (Amiga & SNES versions), SideWinder (Amiga version), Barbarian II (Atari ST Platform version), Shadow Warrior and Blood (PC versions), Phantasie III (Atari ST version), Shanghai II (Rare SNES version), Ultima II (Atari ST Mono version), Star Trek Voyager Elite Force (PC version), GoldenEye and Doom 64 (N64 versions).

Even though I am looking for the above game recordings, I will accept ALL video game recordings.  Make sure that you practice playing the game first before recording it, this way you will be recording your best.  Remember, that millions of people will be seeing this movie.  It will be sold, starting in New York City, as a commercial product and hopefully will be sold in all video stores around the world.  So do your best.  And thanks for the help in advance.    :-D

I wouldnt mind helping out in the project really, but who knows what games I can play really. Sounds kinda interesting, but then id have to find a VCR and a good tape to start recording. I was wondering, how long do you want each tape to be? Like 10mins, 20mins or what?

I was thinking of recording me and my bros playing Capcom VS SNK for the Dreamcast, or even Marvel VS Capcom 2.  They are of the fighting genre, but let me know what you want...

Hi kd7ota,

Record whatever game you like and up to 2 hours.  I will only use the best 30 seconds to 2 minutes of each VHS tape or DVD and only if your game is selected to be one of the games in the movie.   :-D

It will be sold as a commercial product

How much will you pay for the videos?

Since you're going to sell it for profit I'd assume you're ready to compensate cost of tape/dvd material and work.

Will you be getting copyright permission for all the games, too?
Title: Re: I am making a movie. Looking for all video game experts.

Hmmm,

You would have to be getting copyrights to display them games.......... :-?

I just thought if they were displaying their games, let them go ahead, because that would just be free advertising for them or something.  :-D

So does anyone know if displaying games would get you into trouble?

Yes, he would need permission from the games' copyright holders to use footage of their work, just like as if he was selling a DVD full of clips of movies.

@kd7ota

I thought that radio stations could just play whatever music they wanted because the record labels would want the free advertising, but it turns out that radio stations pay a fee for every song they play. Something to do with radio stations making money off playing songs that aren't their property. Makes sense. Even jukeboxes have a license fee attached to every song. Even bars can't just put in a jukebox and play whatever music, they have to pay someone for permission.

Tell you what.    I can provide music for this movie in any genre youd like. (im a pro musician)  and also can provide some video games from the amiga that noone has ever seen...(my own games i made over a few years time)  boy do I have some stories about amiga.   I used to spend all day and night coding games.   I let my friend read my code and add some to it while i slept for an hour.. and then we would swap and i would code while he slept.  we never stopped for days at a time.   and have some very kick ass games to show for it.  But since amiga went under I lost the motivation and moved on to music full time.  I will have to gather all of my old disks from the amiga... I have boxes and boxes full of them and removable drives... so much crap its sick.   a 500 and a 2000   the 500 has a modded wooden alteration to it for more ram or somthing.. its funny.   also.. I made a 3d graphics engine in amos. lol   keep in mind it was a what...65 mhz computer. hahaha  I got it working tho.  had to make all my own math and stuff.. none of this include {bleep}.    I did the music and the artwork...  There is one game i was developing for well over 6 years.   During that time the entire thing was acidentally deleted and i had to start over.   wow i wanted to murder who did it!  But i got back to it and have it 80% finished.  Im afraid to give out too much about the game itself since it still hasnt been done and I was the first to make it. copyright etc.   but i will get it all together asap.  let me know what else you need vai email... for a demo of my music  click this.   www.musichopper.com/ROBOT/MAGNETS.mp3

What I'm wondering is how he's managed to get approval from all amiga game companies in the world, since he said he'd accept videos of any games, and later that he already had the required permissions.

yea, i thought it sounded alittle bit off, and for him knowing what our name was for credits, I would hate for a game company to deal with me for recording the footage of my gameplay, and have him blaim me for the recording. I think if it ever is out in stores, then I will buy a copy and have Doomy sign it.

listen people... there isnt one game creator who would NOT want free publicity or accolade for their old games that noone will be buying anyway.   I think you need to take a step back and stop bashing this guys movie plans.  It would take him a few phone calls to what.  30 gaming companies simply requesting the use of video footage of their games for use... next your gonna tell me he has to contact gateway computers to be able to show an amiga system on video!  relax.   none of you should be in any way concerned with his copyright law issue... he will very easily solve that with a few phone calls and mailings.   WHY ARE YOU ALL TAKING HIS IDEA PERSONALLY.. LIKE YOUR THE SOFTWARE MAKER?   talk about issues people.  ****! im willing to give a free viewing of my games and stuff.    what gives?   and who do you think you all are?!

First of all I want to say that all of the copyright law concerns will be taken care of.

Second, you do not have to include your real name if you don't want to.  I just though it would be cool for you guys to see your names in the movie credits that millions of people will see.

The money from the movie will go to NASA to help fund the Mars space program.  I really believe that it is time for us to start our own Star Trek Era, FOR REAL not just a TV show.  If we all would just stop fighting and work together on the space program we could build a real Starship Enterprise or Voyager and begin the exploration of space.  We need to get away from the money system and start sharing this planets resources.  Right now money is what motivates us, this is wrong.  Bettering ourselves should be our main motivation.  Until we get away from money and religion we will never evolve to our next stage of evolution and we will continue to have our silly little wars.

Anyway, think about all of the fun times you guys have had playing video games and of how far we have come.  I myself would love to see a movie of the video game era.  One of my intentions is to show in the movie interviews with all of the great people who made video games possible, programmers, artists, game level designers, musicians.  So, if any of you folks are reading this and want to be interviewed just pmail me.    :-D

I think we use use the proceeds to build a SeaQuest DSV.

Most men do not like Voyager because the captain is a woman. But, Star Trek Voyager actually had the best special effects and the finest cast.
------------------------------------------------------

Janeway was cool.  I was impressed with how well she kept her smoking habbit a secret from the crew.

I was also impressed by her uncanny "Trans-Dimensional Beings" sense.

Kim:  I'm reading a disterbance on deck 6.

Janeway: Is it Trans-Dimensional Beings?

Me (thinking): Trans-wha?

Funny thing is, it almost always turned out to be Trans-Dimensional Beings.

Janeway was cool, and I bet the fact that she is a woman is actually more of a PLUS for male Star Trek fans...

But you gotta admit that TNG was the best and that Enterprise is the worst.

I'm not a copyright lawyer but I'm really not so sure on this, it could fall under fair usage since it's not a copy of the full game itself.  In any case the companies in question are hardly likely to care (unless it makes pots of money) and that's ultimately what really matters.

This is one of the funniest threads I'ev read in a while.

I can't believe anyone would even consider this lame idea of Doomy's.  It's really funny that people started seriously discussing it. (They must not know DoomMaster)

Here are the parts if the thread I found funny:

In classic DoomMaster style he created an account called 'robot' and then praised his own idea.  Something Doomy has done a lot in the past.

I almost wet my pants laughing when he starts off by saying you can send in a video of just about a million different games, but then says he "already" has gotten permision for all these companies. Outragous claims is another Doomy calling card.

And then to top it off "The money from the movie will go to NASA to help fund the Mars space program."  Oh, I had to get get tissue I was crying from laughing so hard.

I suppose his plans to sell "Millions" of copies was pretty rich too.

-Thanks for the good laughs as always Doomy

Post by: kd7ota on August 09, 2004, 08:32:29 PM
Yea,

The call for selling millions of copies is kinda a bad call as long as the whole 'give your name' to give you credit at the end of the movie..... But to be honest, I think nobody sits down and reads the credits....

And for wasting all that money for founding something that will probably never be possible.....

But I could have sworn my teacher my freshmen year of highschool told me that some smart guy at Nasa was off by a number, and some launch made to mars, it missed it and nearly WASTED millions of dollars for no good reason... But I am not sure if it was announced  to the public, but pretty much it would be the same thing as of now.... Just off by ONE number, and there goes the entire project....

There is a simple reason why the Special FX was better in Voyager than TNG, we are talking close to a 10 year gap here?  FX has moved on a great deal and some things where not possible back in TNG hay day.

And you are being a complete {bleep} to say that because the captain was female they didnt like Voyager, not everyone is that narrow minded Doomy. Everyone has there own opinion on what was was the better show and why, IMO to say one is better over there other simply because of special FX or a female captain is crazy in my book.

Quote
but Star Trek Voyager is the Best of the Best. The best Star Trek Captain is Katheryn Janeway who KICKED THE BORGS ARSE when nobody else could !!!!

Have you forgot Picard?   hehe ok select memory loss then.

My fav has to be TNG, not because of the Special FX which seemed cool at the time but for the characters. everyone of them rocked and the stories where fresh.

DS9: it sucked the big one until worf joined then things got interesting, it seemed to be going nowhere until later seasons, then it got interesting and i liked it.
I don't get the Borg stuff though, its like they never existed in that world, yeah right!

Voyager: i probably watched every episode and i liked Janeway as captain, she done a good job. The show seemed to loose it self in a few seasons but overall pretty good.
I put it 2nd, just above DS9.

My all time fav though was B5. Fantastic crew, fantastic FX,  and storylines that put other ScI-Fi shows to shame. (just my opinion though) It just about had everything except a budget to keep going. shame!
It will return in some form soon though :-)

On a slightly different note, IIRC and please correct me if i'm wrong but in the last maybe 2 seasons of Voyager, around the time the special FX was raised a few bars in the show was because some of the B5 crew signed up in that department.

Look, the original Star Trek was the best, and any of you considering "working" with Doomy on his "project" should have your heads examined.  Sadly, the thread wherein our resident f------ lunatic stomps around posting "LOLOERS PWN3D!!111oneone" and claiming he's going to destroy a.org with DDos attacks have been removed; if they weren't, I'd link to them or cut and paste them just to remind you all that our friendly Doomy here - while stupid and impotent - at least expressed a desire to wreck the 'site.

Dude...Babylon 5 ended because...the story is over!  You know - station blow up go boom?  There's nothing left to tell.  It didn't have anything to do with budget.  The five year story arc ended with the episode "Sleeping in Light", exactly the way JMS wanted it to.  His tepid attempts to "bring it back", with Crusade and Legend of the Rangers fell flat because people knew the damn story was over already.
Title: Re: I am making a movie. Looking for all video game experts.

The last season may never had happened only because they just secured getting the budget. The had decided to rap it up i guess as they knew that it would be the final season they could do, running out of story maybe.
What im saying is, they almost never even got that done.

The fall of the B5 station isnt directly linked with these spin of shows. Crusade did feature B5 in 1 episode but it had no need whatsoever to do that. They had there own mission to do. B5 is just a station, they still have the whole universe to work with

Both where good shows and Crusade got axed before it had even aired. LOTR was more a one of, it was on the cards to do more if it was popular. sadly that never happened.

The next show will probably be another spin of in the B5 world but JMS isnt saying much about it from what i last read.

If I would be making a movie it would be the History of Amiga, and I would have the funds donated to the Classic Amiga Preservation Society Museum.

Frankly, G4-TechTV already covered the history with in-depth material of home and arcade games including video interviews of their authors. GSN (Game Show Network) recently aired their version of the history of the video games of all time.

Why would you want to send the money to NASA?  Isn't the federal government already funding all their missions and other projects and office space?  Aren't they getting money from tours and gifts/merchandise?

Some thoughts:

Copyright should not be an issue.  As long as the clips are kept to the requried maximum time, and the movie adds content, there should be no problem.  This is WAY on the right side of fair use.  I know that on A.org the word pirate gets used instead of the word terrorist, but really guys, there isn't one around every corner trying to bring the global economy to it's knees.

That being said, anyone who thinks that VHS is a adequate format to use as a source materiel for making a for profit movie in this day and age clearly does not understand the process well enough to even make a decent amateur film.  It sounds more like someone who has found a buyer for used VHS tapes.

Voyager sucked.  Janeway sucked.  Not because she was a woman, but because they spent too much effort show how she was a pseudo-feminist.  How she was just as good as a man for all of the stereotypical man things, but was even better because she was also good at all of those stereotypical woman things.  She also simply did not carry herself as a leader.

The Orginal StarTrek was the best followed by Enterprise, DS9, and finally TNG.

Of course Calen is right that B5 was better than any of the ST shows as long as you completely forgot about Crusade with it's cheesy D&D cast.  What I always wish they would do is play off of the episode where the earth was destroyed.  It was the one where they showed the last humans leaving earth in the far far future, an did a time line montage of the human race.  One of the scenes was of a ranger that was masquerading as a monk during a midevil period.  If done well, that could make for a good show.  Not specifically about the monk, but Rangers hiding out on primitive planets making sure that things move in generally the right direction for the planet's long term development.

After the first season it stopped being the "i am woman hear me roar" show and just became the "star trek is fun to watch" show.

In any case, since someone reopened this thread, where's the guy that started it? Did he die? This thread did.

No way!  How do you think Nasa got funding for the mars rovers?
