Playing Acorn Games with IBM PC on MS-DOS?
« on: May 12, 2016, 10:53:38 PM »
This might be abit off topic as the post is about PC games but thought I would ask anyway. Do you know if you can play Acorn Archimedes games on an IBM PC with them running them in MS-DOS? Thanks for your help.

I would say no. The Archimedes uses a different processor, operating system and file system. It would be like trying to run an Amiga game in MS-Dos.

Best best is to use an emulator like this one:

There was one acorn archimedes emulator that worked under MS-DOS.

If my memory is not playing tricks on me, it was called "Red Squirrel".

Which also runs on AmigaOS 3 ;) Although I wouldn't recommend it; even the old ARM CPUs are many times faster than the average 68k Amiga.

It works at a useable speed on most OS4 machines though.

Cool, thanks for that guys. Think Risk OS has now got Dos-Box availability. Guess you could run  PC Floppies on this emulator for the Archimedes computer.

RiscOS runs natively on RaspberryPi.

Depends how you define 'average 68k Amiga'. A moderately clocked 68020 beats an ARM2.

Nope, cant run dosbox on an archimedes, and especially not pc floppies.
Dosbox for risc os is for other risc os hardware (like rpi as kolla mentioned).

Also, you can run arcem, along with some other archimedes emulators under dos.
Pretty much anything using sdl can be used under dos if you use something like hx extender. You can also use some win9x software (command line mostly) using similar dos extensions.
Near as I can tell this is where I write something under the guise of being innocuous, but really its a pot shot at another persons/peoples choice of Amiga based systems. Unfortunately only I cant see how transparent and petty it makes me look.

So I'm assuming DOS was far more advanced than Risc OS back in the day.

Nah, probably not.
While not up to amiga os standards, risc os, for its time, wasnt too bad.
I personally quite like dos, but it is, and always was, quite archaic.
It has some advanced software, but it doesnt necessarily use OS functions.

No way.  Some of the underlying architecture of RISC OS is a bit suspect, but it's a fully windowed multi-tasking environment, and far superior to DOS in... probably every way imaginable.

The user interface has a lot of unique features, other operating systems could learn a lot from it.
