Title: Question about Amiga Floppy Drives
Post by: on November 05, 2002, 02:10:47 PM
Hi all!

I've got an Amiga 1200 with a broken floppy drive, do I have to use an original Amiga floppy or can I use a standard PC floppy...somebody told me that it's possibile with some gadgets...does anybody know anything about it?

And another question: is there any software to read adf files right from the harddrive?

Thanks in advance for your answer(s)

Silver

If you want to use a PC floppy drive you'll also need a catweasel controller by Individual Computers (http://www.jschoenfeld.com/indexe.htm).

This will allow you to read a number of different disk types (Apple, PC, Amiga + more). The new catweasell III also allows you to plug in an A4000 keyboard and two Amiga joysticks though you may need a towered Amiga to use it (though it connects to clockport) - I'm not 100% sure on this though.

The old catweasel my be sold out so you'll have to try Amibench or ebay.

Cheers,

J

For reading ADFs directly for harddrive:
I dont know if this is actually possible, but I know it was for DMS files. Wow! :-o Its seems forever since I layed fingers on my Amiga 1200.  I am just waiting till I put my new 1.2gig Athlon setup together, then I will put out my A1200 and start to conquer my Peecee. :-)

You will need an Amiga disk drive, and the PeeCee ones will not work unless you have that catweasel controller.  You can probably find disk drives for your Amiga 1200  at www.softhut.com or www.amibench.org.  They also shouldnt be that much either.

It`s a DiskMashed file.

"Whats a DiskMashed file?" I hear you ask...

It`s basically a compressed image of a complete floppy disk. Amiga magazines used to use them, so they could covermount 3 or 4 floppies worth of stuff, but only have to use 2 or 3 disks.
