Title: CF adapter bracket for A500 floppy drive location
Post by: blanning on February 27, 2021, 05:24:07 PM
Does such a thing exist?  The floppy drive location seems like an ideal location for a CF card so it can be easily removed without modding the case.

The snag here is that if you  plug in to the floppy drive connector - you are limited to floppy drive speeds. A CF version of a Gotek isn't going to be quicker than a Gotek, and would be more expensive.

Bit of a non starter I regret. But, if you have WB2.x or higher, you can go CF-IDE adapter on the 68K socket without too many problems.

A Startech 35BAYCF2IDE or similar is probably your best bet.

Oh right - an adapter mount rather than a device.

There are a couple designs on Thingiverse for similar ideas, but they're not really A500 friendly. I guess you could hack them together with Imagine to make something that would work;-

https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4470275  <Akai floppy drive mount but mounting hole wrong

https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1026187  <CF 3.5 inch IDE adapter

The tricky part is mounting the CF adapter solidly.

EDIT: The Akai floppy mount probably won't load in Imagine, needs converting to verbose stl or obj I think.

EDIT EDIT: Real 3D 3.5 loads and saves in "3d systems binary and Ascii2, which today everybody can call stl without being sued. Don't use Lightwave for 3d printed objects - any circles created will print as hexagons.

I mean just physical location.  I would run a ribbon cable over to an ide connector over by the cpu.

You will have to drill new screw holes in it to fit.

It's designed to fit in bays with no front bezel, and the A500 is designed for floppy drives with no front bezel.

You can't cut just cut the front bezel off the 35BAYCF2IDE, the circuit board is right next to it.
