Title: can I add external cd to a2000 ?
Post by: rednova on August 24, 2013, 10:53:00 PM
Dear friends:

I have a working amiga 2000.
It has a 68000/1 mb chip 2mb ram 50 mb hd.
Can I add an external cd drive to it ?
What do I need and how can I do it ?
I would prefer if I can install it without adding
internal components or opening the case.
Thanks !!!

...why don't you want to install it internally?

what scsi controller does it have? should have a D25 pin connector on the back for external scsi devices... but I don't see much point in having an A2000 if you're adding external peripherals... may as well have an A500 :p

I you have SCSI controller with external connector then you should be able to do it.
Most have 25pin ext connector, this one should work: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Panasonic-Portable-External-8x-PCMCIA-CD-ROM-SCSI-Player-Built-in-Speakers-Cable-/151096325245?pt=US_CD_DVD_Blu_Ray_Drives&hash=item232e0af47d

You need a SCSI card or a USB card installed to be able to use an external CDROM.

For an internal drive you need a SCSI card or an IDE card.

You can buy just a Zorro II SCSI card on it's own or a CPU accelerator with built in SCSI card from ebay or amibay.  I highly reccomend the latter if you have the funds.

dear friends:
My amiga is now off and i am to lazy to power, but now I remember
last time I checked the specs on the amiga it said, included with the
68000 and ram, it did say something 'scsi' some kind of scsi + a number.
But I do not know if it has an output to external connection.
Tell you what, I'm gonna try to start my amiga and check the specs.
Thank you !!!

I just noticed you have a 50MB HD, didn't see that earlier sorry.

You probably already have a SCSI card in there so you need to get a 25pin external DVD or CDROM or writer.  They go for pocket change on ebay.

Hi:

On showconfig:
BOARDS:
CBM A590/A2091 HD controller:   ---etc etc---
CBM A2052/58.RAM ---etc etc-----

I was wrong, there is no mention on showconfig of a scsi anything.
thank you !!!!

the 590/2091 is the scsi controller. all you need is a scsi cdrom and proper cable, like the panasonic listed in the link above by someone. the 2091 has a external db25 port to add scsi devices externally.

it makes much more sense to install it inside the A2000 however,it is what the 5.25" drive bay was for.

Yep, that's excellent advice.

Here's an example of an internal 50pin SCSI DVDROM for $10

Hi:

I am not a hardware kind of guy and I am very afraid of installing the cd drive
internally. If i can just hook an external cd drive, it will be really easy and do not
have to worry about screwing the system.
Any thoughts ?

It's quite a simple procedure to open up any big box Amiga and fit a CDROM etc, but if you feel more comfortable with external hardware just search ebay for '25 pin external scsi cdrom" etc. :)

Even with an external SCSI drive you may still need to mess with termination, ID number, etc.  I'd echo everyone else's comments to just go internal, it's only five screws to open the case, then 6 or 7 to remove the drive sled, screw the drive onto the sled, connect a cable (you may need one with two headers if your current cable doesn't already have them), remove the bay cover on the front of the case... sorry if those steps make it sound more complicated, it really isn't!  ;)
