Title: Hate! Hate! Hate! (take 2)
Post by: Wayne on June 12, 2009, 03:27:00 PM
A wise man once said "you may not know yourself until you see with different eyes".

I'm opening this topic to allow you guys to point out anything that you DO NOT like about the current site so that we might learn, understand, and have the opportunity to fix it.

If there's something you have to say about this site and what you think we're doing wrong, PLEASE feel free to do it in a constructive manner.

-- i.e. --
"You suck", not so helpful because it doesn't explain why we suck, what we suck, or how we could reverently not suck so much. .

"You suck, but I really think that you could suck less if you would xyz", potentially helpful because it's not only bitchy, but in a good, constructive way.

Thanks,

Wayne

Can't say I really HATE anything.. anymore... I don't even miss the old site which worked just fine. I like the new customizingoption, and the overal look improved a lot since the initial version. Sorry to be of no help ;-)

I think you need to go back to the yoda avatar.  No offense, but your pic looks like a sad french inspector...

But seriously, for some unknown reason, the new site seems cramped to me, like there's TOO much info right from the start / on the main page.  I wish I could be more specific...

Loved the revamp from the beta stage, in fact I spend more time here than I ever have in the past. I still cannot for the life of me figure out what this Rep Power thing is, you see a person with a reputation of 10 and a Rep Power of 6 whereas I have a reputation of 39 and a Rep Power of 8.

I can't honestly think of anything I hate. The only thing which would be nice would be the option to customise the home page as a logged off user. That way you still get your preferred layout when lurking as you do when logging in. I have no idea if that's possible within vBulletin though.

Apart from that, the only other thing is that the mobile interface doesn't scale to the iPhone screen and you can't zoom out, meaning there's lots of scrolling involved. Though I understand that's part of the theme and can't readily be changed.

I should study more the situation, but as said above, there's a general "mess" with a lot of things around that create a bit of confusion.

In my opinion remove the login frame from the top page and just leave the space on the upper right corner.
When logged, in the home page, always remove the frame with avatar and personal info from the top page, and place the same in the upper right corner (with avatar and other relevant info as well - more than now).

Remove the popular tags frame as default.
Place the poll section before the user list.

...and maybe I'm not used to the new site, but I'm not able to find the list of my previous post.

Hope this helps!
Ciao from Italy!

You suck. ;)

Actually, I love the site now, initially it was a bit clumsy but I knew it just took a bit of tweaking. I think you've done a great job Wayne and everyone else involved, now sit back for a while and let people get used to it - maybe put a suggestion box link somewhere to collect ideas.

While I think of it though, one little idea (and it's one that's quite popular in a couple of forums I admin)... Is it possible to add a minimal smiley bar/box to the quick reply screen? I miss it when it's not there after using it elsewhere.

Thanks guys! No hate from me anyway!

When I click on the "New Posts" link it only shows a few results, where as it used to show a lot more. Now I miss out on most recent topics. Is there a way to fix that?
Title: Re: Hate! Hate! Hate! (take 2)
Post by: meega on June 12, 2009, 04:50:04 PM
@Cammy

Yes... when you are logged out you have "Today's Posts" with this link http://www.amiga.org/forums/search.php?do=getdaily

and when logged in it is changed to "New Posts" which is http://www.amiga.org/forums/search.php?do=getnew

So bookmark the logged out version. ;)

Ed: I've just discovered Today's Posts is also under Quick Links... :)

I hate that there is no direct link from a users profile to the gallery of same user. At least I havent found any other way than remembering the user id number, enter the gallery, pick a random user's gallery and replace the user number in the URL.

I would expect to find something under statistics - am I blind, dumb... both? :)

Not really possible under the way things are-- and no, I don't need PHP 101 from all you wannabe coders --  Anonymous users essentially share one "login"

I really can't split my focus between the 99% of users on the regular interface and the few using the mobile interface right now, though it's on the list when the regular interface gets as closed to finished as it can.

I'll see what I can do, but without hand-editing code -- which means it'll have to be RE edited every single time we upgrade, I'm not sure if what you're asking is possible.  I could just turn off that whole box, but only if everyone agreed.

Remove the popular tags frame as default.
Fair enough.  I thought they would be more useful than they have been in helping users find specific topics to read/discuss.  Maybe not.

You should be able to find your posts from inside your User CP, or when you're in a forum, by clicking on a post of yours to "find other posts by username"

Edit : Quick Links >> Your Profile >> Statistics >> Find posts made by (your username)

You can bookmark that I believe, but if I click on "Wayne" above my picture to the left, I get "find more posts by Wayne" as a dropdown option.

The "Quick Reply" is meant to be exactly that.  Minimal, type a message, hit submit and you're done.

Not dumb, but essentially what I think happens is that Jelsoft, the people who wrote vB, the VBAdvanced people, and every other author works on their separate product but doesn't really integrate them all as well as they should.

Should be a simple template edition, but please...  Add it to the Bug tracker (http://www.amiga.org/forums/project.php) so I don't forget it, and I'll see what I can do.

That was intentional. People were complaining that the coffee house forums were showing up whereas on the old site they didn't so the site was brought in line with what people were used to.

Duplication of icons make the news items seem a little cluttered.

The new custom category icons look much better than the small default ones anyway. If possible can the small ones be elilminated.

I'm glad there's not too much hate on this thread or I would have felt obliged to start a Love! Love! Love! (take 2) thread :D

It seems the user id in the generated link all point to the logged in person's user id. It doesn't matter who's gallery I try to look at, I get sent to my own.

The category icons you created are sufficient. If the default ones could be turned off it'd would just look a bit neater.

Thanks for pointing that out! So, how come we can't just have a link to "Today's Posts" on the site when you ARE logged in? The "New Posts" link is useless when it only shows one or two results, why not replace ONE of the TWO "New Posts" links with a "Today's Posts" link and make everyone happy? Notice there is one link at the top of the page and another on the side?

Actually, I remembered WHY that's there.  That's there both for the users to work with and quickly find a topic (click A1200 to see all A1200 threads), but *also* and in a way, more importantly, for Search Engine Optimization (SEO).  Makes us popular.  We like popular.  Popular is fun.

I like the new site. I can not say much about it. I am not a web site designer.
I kind of miss the old site, but not a whole lot, I hope the new technology or software is better for Amiga.org

I do not know if this is right so  here goes.
I am refering to sites in general.
We have
chat,
video conferencing,
blogging,
video services like youtube,
email,
flash games,
office apps,
and picture albums.

I am not for sure exactly how to use these to promote the Amiga.
I hope it may help someone.
I think it would be nice to have a virtual Amiga Desktop to show off the Amiga.
I do not know if that would be beneficial, maybe just nostalgic.

I liked that panel (mainly to see the number of posts since my last visit, and click then that link to view them), but now it is gone, it does not even appears on the right side :(

IHMO, i don't see why any such panel/box should be removed from the code, since we the users can remove it to our wishes by using the 'customize page' section...

That apart, i don't have any "hate" complain to do, i like a lot the new site :)

well, while posting this, i had to add the ognix's quote manually since it wasn't done automatically clicking the "Quote" button.. just a minor issue..

whatever, keep up the good work

With apologies, the old "new posts" page was a custom written module (from me).  The new site doesn't provide a way to segment like that natively, and if we custom changed it, it'd have to be rewritten every time a new version came out (something we're trying to avoid).

I can certainly add Coffee House discussions back to the new posts page if you'd like.

Hi.  I like the site.  I like most stuff new since it moves things ocasionally.

Advances if lucky.  All I can hear and see is it was a great turn to do so.  And since this is a community site I claim to be part of, I'm ended up really happy here.

But I'm a lazy pal.  I buy and use out-of-the-box stuff.  Almost never touch preferencess unless crucial.  Now I got many things to sort out here to myself, also check many new features.  So my only suggestion is to provide/a link / tutorial to this brand new CMS system (I mean just a rare system).  A pdf file attached would be nice.

Oh - one more.  An OFFICIAL new site anouncement on the MorphZone (as long as MOS catalog is included as discussed recently).

Cheers!  Someone should give Wayne a raise

While i *begin* to like this site (again) while using my sam and OWB I'm still not happy with a "quick browse" to amiga.org using my trusty OS3.9 systems. The fully fledged version is known to be creativly "reconstructed" by AWeb, IBrowse and Voyager and the mobile version is ... ahem ... not that sophisticated ;-)

Ah yeah, I know about the smileys in the advanced editor, but seeing as I probably use at least one smiley per post, and most posts are just quick replies, I find it nice to have, especially seeing as some smileys are interpreted differently from forum to forum. See the attached grab from another forum - not too intrusive I would've thought.

OTOH, it may well be a big job to add it to vBulletin, I've never worked on it...

I realize you probably haven't read the hundred or so posts explaining that the site is no longer 100% compatible with the classics, as well as why not, but suffice to say that time has marched on, and the classic Amiga browsers have not.  Don't use a dead, unsupported browser to try and reach a web site then expect it to work.. Go yell at the authors of those browsers and tell them to quit slacking off.  They've had 12 years worth of break, it's time to get back to work.. .. :)

On the old Amiga.org , if you held the mouse pointer over the 'Random Pic' you would get a short description of the pic .....  no more  I know, it's nit-picking.. but sometimes I can't tell what that shrunken pic is...

But beyond that, great job Wayne....

The grey bar at the top with the "Submit News", "User CP" and "Log Out" buttons does not seem consistent with the rest of the UI to me. Personally I preferred it when these links were part of the main links bar directly underneath the logo, in the same style as "Home", "Forums", "Gallery" etc.

We need Yetisports games for the arcade, especially Yeti Seal Bounce. I don't know if they are they free though.

Also a few others

Hi,

@Wayne

I think that new avatar you have really stinks, but what is worse is that your locality, is Huntsville AL. That is just a stone throw away from Panama City, FL. God how I miss that place. Being stuck up here in Pennsyltucky is the worst. The dumbest redneck down South is smarter than the smartest yankee up North. The teachers up here get paid to much for what they teach, the politicians from the North would be tarred and feathered down south, the judges up in the North are more crooked than the crooks.

I am calling it pick on Wayne day, just because he lives down South where I want to be but can't because my choice is move down South and starve, or keep my job up in the North.

So everyone blast Wayne for anything it is officially blast Wayne day!!

By the way the site looks good, I have no complaints here.

They've had 12 years worth of break, it's time to get back to work.. .. :)

Wayne
You are right and....errr...not. Of course you (and the Amiga.org web backbone) have reasons to move on, but there *some* people you leave behind. i am rather lucky to own a amiga(-like) system that is capable to make use of the new style and techniques but this is coincidence. this is since some weeks now. before arrival of my sam amiga.org was a dead end for my classic systems which is/was sad, 'cos amiga.org was my first browse of the day beneath amiga-news.de.

I accept that most users surrendered ;-) and browse amiga sites with a windows pc (or aquivalents).

We all -- myself more than most -- understand the loss of potential users, but 12 years after the most current classic browser was released, the number of people who got left behind were far, far outweighed by the advantages offered by the new system.

This, being 2009, is just one of those situations where -- if the authors of those browsers hadn't given up -- it would still be perfectly usable if they hadn't.

I had a choice.  Move forward, or close the site.  I hope I chose well.

Nothing that ANY system which uses smileys can do, except to change all smiley codes to phonetic, : smile : / : grin : and so forth, which would pretty much make things worse for everyone.

Try using the [ code ] feature for things like that.

I absolutley understand your point of view - *maybe* there is something in the pipe with a new, buyable IBrowse, progress in AWeb or a usable version of Netsurf. Until then - we "original classic system" users are somewhat lost. And, btw, I do NOT count UAE users: first of all they surrendered, too ;-) and they might be able to use classic 68k-ports like OWB where a real system is way to slow to be useful.
Despite this i really appreciate all the work you and all others do and did with amiga.org!

I'll see what I can do.  You might submit it as a feature request using the bug tracker.

The problem is that that bar is getting too long for lower resolution users, causing it to wrap.

I'm still working on how to better get all of that done, but the reason it was separated was to give a secondary bar to promote the "submit" feature for each section.

If anyone is a graphic artist and has a better idea for how it should be done, I'm all ears.

the option that I like is link to all my posts. but it was easier on old site to get there from main (or not?)
if it could provide a quick information on which of the threads I 'participated' in have new posts, it would be great.

I thought it was quite easy to get to. Just click on your name on your post above and select the option that says find more posts by [user].

I can't find a thing to gripe about. So far, so good. I spend more time here than I used to. (and I already needed a 32 hour day!)

The thing I miss is the photo album comment notification. Because of the wonderfully large selection of random photos, I've been seeing lots of pictures I never saw before and I'm commenting all over the place. But because there is no notification, if I want to see if somebody replied to my comment, I have to search for that photo.

I hate it. I really hate it. I HATE HATE HATE IT!! Man, it sucks. That's it! I'm never coming back! Screw this! I don't need to take this CRAP!!! Damn you all to hell!!!!!1

One thing I don't know how to do is access my public profile without first finding one of my posts clicking on my id and going trom there...

I think there must be a quicker way (maybe in the quicklinks menu? But I can't get quicklinks menu to work on the ipod touch)
