Can a PeeCee read a Miggy HDD?
« on: October 21, 2002, 12:23:42 AM »
I want to copy the contents of my Amiga HDD to my WinUAE HDD.  Will a PeeCee running Windoze ExPee be able to read my Amiga HDD (340Mb) directly?  I have the 2.5" to 3.5" converter cable of course (not THAT stupid :-) )

Didnt want to chance arseing the whole thing up, so decided to ask first.

If it won't read it directly, is there any way  to MAKE it read it?

Cheers   :-?

"No", and "not through Windows" respectively.

You may be able to make an x86 system read it, but you'd need Linux or AmigaOS XL to do it.

Well, if you wait for the next release of WinUAE, it's supposed to be able to read Amiga hard drives directly (but only in Windows 2000 and XP).  S'posed to be out around the beginning of November IIRC.

Well, you can always do what I did.  I backed up my entire hard drive to a compressed file, then using a null-modem cable uploaded the entire thing to my PC.  Using WinUAE I was able to unarchive it.  I decided to unarchive to a NTFS partition instead of a WinUAE disk file so I can access my files from the XP side and Amiga side.  Only one catch to this, some valid Amiga file names cause problems under windows and WinUAE can hang when trying to create these file names in an NTFS filesystem.

The other obvious way to do this is to burn your Amiga HD onto a CD-R or two or three....  then just load them onto your PC.  This way you get a backup and transfer your Amiga stuff to your PC all in one go!

Managed to do the file transfer by linking me Laptop and Me Amiga via the parallel ports with a Weird Science 'Network PC' thingy I bought about 5 years ago.

Was copying things directly into the WinUAE HDD directory from the Amiga.  Works a treat - got AMOS Pro and all me old AMOS proggies working now.

Cheers everyone!  :-P
