I've tidied up my DIY A1200 tower
« on: November 03, 2018, 03:13:00 PM »
I've had some spare time this week so I've cleaned up my DIY tower which I originally built about 19 or 20 years ago.

The front had yellowed and I was never happy with the rear which was really untidy but I was limited by skills and correct tools. I had also mounted the motherboard on the 'wrong' side of the tower.

I cut out the back of the tower and made a new plate plate out of aluminium. I also dismantled, sprayed and lacquered the front.

I reassembled everything this morning, and after a black screen which I traced to the RAM in the Blizzard being loose, everything is back up and running and looking nice.

It's not perfect. There are some dust particles in the paint/lacquer and I messed up the PSU mount on the back, but it's much nicer than it was and assembled much more solidly.

Next steps are to connect the wires using solder and heat shrink and to spray the CD ROM cover and the keyboard case; but I've run out of paint and time for now.

Here are some pics of before, during and after.

Could use a wireless card in the PCMCIA slot I suppose instead of wired network. Something just occurred to me about using them in a tower case though - how the heck does the wireless signal get out of the earthed metal case? Maybe you'd need a perspex side cover instead to get the signal out!

We're having an electrician in this week and one if the jobs is new sockets in the loft. I'm hoping that I can then use a set of powerline adapters I have.
I looked into wireless cards before and think you can get some with separate aerials.
