A4000 battery - can i just snap it off?
« on: February 24, 2004, 01:43:22 PM »
I recently bought a 4000 desktop off a guy at work. The battery looks -ok-, but i'd rather just remove it. I don't have the tools to solder it off, actually i'd just like to clip it off. I'll mainly be using it to run old scene demos and few games so I wouldn't be missing it much anyways. So if i clipped the battery off without replacing anything, would it still boot up fine?

I did just that with my a500+, basically snapped the battery off with a pliers! (please dont do it that way). The only thing the battery is there for (at least on the 500 series anyway) is for the clock, so obviosley that will keep on resetting itself.

Works great now :-)

I have two A3000s and for one of them, I snipped the battery off with wire cutters (it was leaking and I figured that cutting it off was less damaging than to let it continue leaking).  The computer operated fine.  I don't think you will have a problem with snipping it off though I suggest you be carful so you don't damage anything.

While I did replace the batteries, you certainly don't have to.  Yet if nothing is wrong with your battery do you gain anythign by getting rid of it?

@zine:
Yes, you can just clip it off. Been running my A4k without a battery for more than a year now (started leaking).

I ran an A4000 without a battery for serveral years and it worked fine, I just put the "Time" preferences program in my WBStartup drawer. So you shouldn't have any problems. As others have said, just take care not to cause any damage when removing it.

If your A4000 has a rev. D motherboard with a Lithium coin cell there should be no need to remove it as this type don't leak like the barrel shaped NiCds.

Maybe there should just be a sticky/locked battery reminder topic at the top of the Hardware forum...

Ok, i rocked it back and forth gently and it snapped off clean. There were some flakes on the motherboard, but i think they were just from snapping it off.

I'm glad i did it because what looked like an OK battery to the eye, looked like this with my nikon:

and the motherboard now:

Thanks for all the help and replies

@Prmetime

Just remember that the A3K use the battery for holding the scsi-settings(no not the battery alone) :-)
