Just noticed the "Radeon graphic cards" part here.
Has it always been there?

Why would anyone replace voodoo with a radeon without 3d support?

@Piru:

That is a good question, however it certainly is a breath of fresh air to see some new hardware supported for the mediator in any shape or form.

Seems like a system update is imminent, but even if Radeon is useless right now, they could have put some other worthy update in it (ethernet, fm801 and sb128 drivers have all a recent change date).

I have looked at the availabilty of Voodoo cards just out of curiosity.
I have a spare one and had considered selling it on.

There seems to be a lot less of them around these days.
So the Radeon might become the only option for newer Mediator owners.
Also the Voodoo cards are getting on a bit so there is also the wear and tear issue.

Just good to see development is ongoing.

I'd like DVI-output, if it's supported. And more gfxmem compared to Voodoo wouldn't hurt either. For 68k systems the 3D acceleration isn't that necessary...

But OTOH, Voodoo3 is faster than Radeon 9200SE for example... and supports that 3D for the little you might need on classics :)

I also read the Elbox page, that Radeon is only supported on Mediator PCI 1200 TX and SX models... not on older models.. is that right?

I think you are right, Radeon support is for SX and TX only.

Regarding GFX RAM I think that A1200 Mediator boards can only access 8mb of any available GFX card RAM.

They should be able to access a card's full memory in pages of 8MB at a time.

@Piru,

Yea, There's pretty much no reason to trade in your Voodoo for one but if this had come out a month ago I probably would have gotten one instead of hunting down a Voodoo.

I've never needed 3d support for what I do on my A1200 but I'm sure it might be a big issue for others.

EDIT:

This may be a silly question but it says that the Radeon 9200 "mobility" is the only one they have tested.

Did they make a PCI card with this chip? I thought they just used them in laptops?

The way the PCI IDs are used by manufacturers isn't very consistent. So you can easily find a gfxcard that claims to have a "mobility" chip.

ATI (now AMD) isn't the only one to make Radeon graphics cards. They have other companies (e.g., Sapphire) producing them too. There's nothing to stop someone from putting a mobility chip onto a regular PCI card. Why you would want to do this, I don't know. Apparently it's been done though.

@Hans & Piru,

thanks for clearing that up.

I think its kind of odd that they have only tested that chip out of all the other versions?

Maybe it was the only one the developer could get their hands on?

I've seen those cards for as little as $5 USD to free these days. I might even have one at work. Maybe I'll try the new driver out on a regular 9200/9250 to see if it works?
