040 a1200 fan recomendation?

Hi there.

I am feeling the need to get my a1200 up and running again.

One hurdle is a keyboard! I know i have 2 a1200 keyboard but i do not know if i have the plastic bit that keeps them in place anymore!

However I think I can probably work this one out. Howwver advice on alternatives would be nice.

My main concern is the fan on my 040 board. Or more to the point the lack of it!

I know it had some sort of small stick on one on it. However thet has fallen off. i did work with some sort of elastic stapped on one for a bit but I think was never a good idea!

I'm sure such a small fan these days is pretty cheap. But on such a board what would I stick one on with. Any recomendations?

think you should towerize the A1200. iirc, there is no room for standard sized heatsink+fan.
and 040 get very hot.

if you must keep it in original case, one option would be to get new, higher 'rubber feet'.
there are slim fans and double-sided thermal tapes, but it doesn't seem to me like a good long-term solution.

It is possible use bigger heatsink and fan it doens't must fit perfectly, you need to set heatsink litle bit towards to the trailing edge and fan even more so that it is not actually is top of CPU hmm side view like stairs?

This how I did with my Apollo 040 40mhz, it doesn't work without fan more than few minits

The 040 on my BlizzPPC is passively cooled at 25MHz. Seemingly, this is enough. However, all 3 of the Apollo 040 boards seem to run hotter and are actively cooled. I replaced the fan on one with a low profile intel fan+heatsink that only adds about 1cm in height and is relatively quiet:


On another card (for a tower machine) I started on a slightly more ambitious custom cooler, derived from a P4 laptop heatpipe based cooler (not actually fitted in the image below, just positioned for a basic measurement):

Im currently using a 40mhz '040 in my desktop a1200 and I find the fan itself isnt too important. If it fits and works it'll probbly be ok, but the problem is ventilation. Id suggest either removing the trapdoor plastic cover or cutting it to provide good airflow. In both cases the a1200 needs to be raised a little compared to normal (larger rubber feet should suffice). It also doesnt hurt to try to prop up one croner of he accelerator if possible to stop it dropping and keep it a little higher (again for airflow).

If you have an Apollo 040 then the timing crystal may no be soldered on and can dislodge.  If you are powered up, this could damage your card.

Thought I would dig up my old thread again since I have finally been in the loft and dug out my amiga hardware so actually have more of an idea now.

I also bought an a500 to play some old games on as well!

Right to the 040 board.

It says Blizzard 1260 REV II. I guess this means it is a 1240 then! (MC68040RC40M) The crystal is 80mhz so I guess this is a 40mhz cpu?

Not tried it yet but after getting the a500 and playing a few classic it has spurred me on to see what I can do out of my other hardware!

So again please any advice on how I should cool this thing? I remember it haveing a stick on fan origionally but that fell apart.

I have a fan with built in heatsink on my 40MHz warpengine. I'd start with just a fan and see how that goes.
