What about a game to launch the AOS 5.0
« on: October 09, 2002, 02:37:47 PM »
Let's face it, if Amiga is to be successful again the AOne SE is going to be like the A1000. Not as successful as later models. So with that in mind how about releasing a new game. I personnally was looking forward to getting my hands on something like Explorer 2260. That game offered almost infinite game play. Of course to develope a game like this would take quite a while so how about in time for AOS 5.0

That I am aware of...

But if you aim for the stars you're bound to pass the moon on the way.

Of course any developer would bare this in mind. There's no point developing software that no one will buy. I just hope there is an AOS 5.0.

I'd really like to know if OS5 is anything more than a stack of paper somewhere...

Well, I think it is a stack of paper. Otherwise
Fleecy or someone would have told us something like.."we are working on OS5". And somehow I
cannot believe OS5 could exist in any form
considering OS4 isnt even done yet. But OS5
isnt going to be based on OS4 anyway,
some says. It will have TAO tech. Whether this
tech is *in* control or *under* control (regarding OS5) is the question. In the beginning Intent
was supposed to be the skeleton of OS5.
But Intent doesnt support memory-protection
and wont in the feature either, so this plan was
scraped (?). Now it would be a waste to not make
use of Intent in some form as alot of developing
and time has been put into it. So probably it will sit
on top of OS5 like it does elsewhere. So again, what will be the skeleton of OS5 ? Linux? QNX ? or pherhaps OS4.x ?. What about the platform-independence ? Maybe there will be *some*
platform independence in the form of a player.
But FULL platform independence ?

Sure as hell it isn't, OS5 is yeaaaaaars away. OS5 is supposed to be the desktop OS (which still has to be released) and intent story integrated in one package not?

AFAIK os4 is written in C(++) isn't it? So I guess they would want to convert it to VP first?

I think it's an intriguing idea. I don't think it's too early to start playing around with ideas for a game, such as story-boarding, flow-charting, etc.

Hmmmm. THis has turned into an OS discussion.

Anyway. We are in the inital processes of developing a space flightsim. In the Elite/Explorer genre. If we don`t plan for OS5 now then we will have the same old, "No software" problem on launch. Developers, wakeup and start planning for the future otherwise there won`t be one either soon or ever.

In order for Aos 5 to be developed. Aos 4 MUST be succesful in some degree, so that amiga have the capital to develop Aos 5. Therefore why not make some new games aimed at Aos 4 in the firstplace? Its not like the Aos 4 platform running on g3 600 mhz or above, is completely wimpy

Okay here is the confusion... with all the buzz about Amiga Inc. wanting the developers only to concentrate software development using the Amiga DE environment, where does this leave AOS4?

What do [you] other programmers think?

Wasn't there supposed to be a convergence of OS4 (the "stopgap" PPC OS), and the DE to alloy together and form OS5?
