Title: So what phone does everyone use?
Post by: Kesa on March 24, 2011, 10:37:22 AM
I just bought a new phone today so i'm in a phone kind of mood. So what phone does everyone use?

So i went hunting for a new phone and i considered all the options and had the cash to buy anything i wanted. I almost bought an iphone but the seller cancelled our sale on ebay. Seriously considered the Samsung Galaxy s. Then i came across a couple of good bargains, the new Blackberry Storm touchscreen and a Blackberry 8310. After much debate i went for the 8310 because retro is cool and touch screens are lame. Oh yeah it has a trackball that lights up! Very cool :)

I'm hoping to start a new trend of being decidely retro. All my friends have iphones and i could have bought one as well but instead i, by choice, went for the cheaper one that had "buttons" on it. I feel like such a rebel. Damn i'm cool

If there's one particular technology trend I have absolutely zero interest in it's mobile phones. Give me something I can dial a number into and speak to people at the other end with and Im happy.
Until today I was more than content with my 6 year old Nokia 6085. I say until today as some random halfwit threw a water balloon at me from their car today while I was walking to the shops, soaking and destroying that phone. I really hope I see those clowns again as I'll happily retrun the favor and break something of theirs. Im thinking a rock through the windshield followed by their nose and/or jaw if they get out of the car after the rock.

I have a Nokia N900 and a Nokia N95, but the one I love using most in my flipping, camcorder-swivelling, big-buttoned brick called a Nokia N93 :)

Voted other

Use a Nokia N900 which runs Mameo , soon to be Meego ot NitDroid when I get  class ten SDHC card .

Easily the best smartphone used.  Its more of a compuer with phone functions on it.

The Internet is the best exerience I have seen.   Having a proper keyboard on it as well as good touch screen is awesome.   Video playback is amazing.

Amount of good progs for this like bittorrent clients, scumm, and every emulator you can think of.

I love my phone

Nokia E52 here. Love it! Less than 10mm thick and the battery lasts around a week. Doesn't have the large screen, but I prefer the traditional keypad. Has a nice chunk of my music on it too and decent sound quality through the standard headphone socket. My only issue was that some applications went missing after a firmware update and couldn't be reinstalled without restoring the backup without my apps and installing them all manually.

Sort of felt like Windows in that regard ;)

I waited and waited until phones could do HD recording which is why I got the Samsung I8910HD the first phone that could, its close to 2 years old now, its been a pritty good phone but i kind of wished I waited seeing what you can get now, it runs Symbian wich is not been that good to make the move to touch phones. Might end up getting the Galaxy S 2 as it does look good and android market seem to have really taken off, or I might wait another year.

I finally gave in and replaced my old phone that couldn't even receive MMS messages, with a HTC Desire HD. I'm never going back to a more basic phone. It's replaced my music player too. The Desire HD has a larger screen than the iPhone, which was a big factor as it suits my big fingers a lot better - typing on my wifes iPhone is a major pain in the ass for me.

I don't use phones at all so I've just got a plain, cheap digital camera to take photos with and never have to pay bills to keep using it. I've got IRC and MSN to keep in touch with the people I know, and a netbook for portability if for some reason I want to be bothered when I'm not at home.

I actually only got myself a mobile at all so as to save money. Cheaper than needing a home phone, especially when I make very, very few calls. Doubl-ey so as I had someone buy me the phone I had. Cost me about $10 every 3 months to keep going. Now that the phone I had for about 6 years is dead though I may end up with something a little more functional than what I had (not sure its even possible to buy such simple phones anymore). Receiving phone calls, SMS msgs, and a Commodore64 emulator for those times I find myself taking long train rides should do nicely :)

I still don't have any reason for a phone myself. What would I do with one? I have no job, no friends and no social life, and I'm always at home if anyone needs to chat with me on the internet about Amiga stuff. To me a phone is just a useless and unnecessary fashion accessory that costs money I don't have.

Exactly! It really is flat and fast, it even has WLAN and GPS. The camera isnt much good though, for that the N82 was much better. Best phone camera I've ever had.

For half a year now I have been able to swap my E52 for a newer phone. But since I really want to stick with Nokia, there isnt much to choose from currently. They really are 'behind' regarding innovation. For a moment I almost got the Nokia N8 but its too expensive and the Iphone4 is still better device. So I guess I havent got much choice.. Im now waiting for a good deal. When is that Iphone5 out anyway.

Land line.
I'm either at work or at home, leave a message. No cell reception from where I live to just short of where I go to work. Makes a cell phone worthless for it's intended use. ie. Emergency situations.
Like when I stuffed my car into a snowbank yesterday on the way to work. I'm digging a-way when a woman rolled up and asked if I needed any hand. I said, "Sure, help get me out of this snowbank and I'll buy you breakfast.", thinking that she would actually help dig the snow from around the car. A few monents later with her hand stuck to her head, she said there was no reception, said sorry and offered to call the sheriff when she got into town. Needless to say, I dug the snow from around the car and drove out within minutes of her leaving the scene.

People are becoming too dependant on technology. Small electronic devices makes for lousy shovels.
That's my story and I'm stickin' to it. :D

@Cammy

My true respects, nice to see someone has the brains to not buy stuff they just don't need.

As for me, I have a landline and my mobile is an ancient Sony K610i. I bought it years ago, it cost over £200 and was top of the range. As one of the first phones with A2DP it still serves as a great MP3 player (with a 2Gig M2 card to hold my songs). The java on it gives me Opera, a periodic table and a scientific calculator, I need little else. I rarely play games on it as I use my GBA for that and I can watch the odd bit of news, get google maps and train times. I have no reason to upgrade and with a good box of spares, including screens I doubt I will buy a new mobile for a good few years yet. It's outlasted many newer phones my friends have bought due to superior build quality, including Apple iPhones. When I do buy a new one it will be a hardened satellite phone. If it ain't built to last, I don't buy it.

I use what work gives me, since they pay my phone service. Previously a blackberry which was decent enough. Currently a windows mobile 6 phone which is a piece of shit.

Going to need getting a phone of my own in a few weeks though, and almost 100% going for an android phone of some sort.
My wife's got the samsung epic which is awesome.

You know what is funny but I think actually texting and making a call on my phone accounts for about 10% of it use, (which is why I got Pay as you Go) the rest is internet, gaming, taking photos or videos, watching a film or simpons eps, lisening to music or the radio and the main featrue is the great GPS and Map service thats got me home a few times when I got lost on long jurneys, it amazing to have so much on a phone. I recommend a smart phone to anyone even if you dont make many calls it is the best all in one tech device you can get, so really you should just treat the Phone as one small feature of the device.

I have to throw my cards in with the why bother crowd. When I needed one it was either provided by my employer or I used a cheap pay as you go phone (like the phones from Virgin Mobile).
But frankly, I don't like being available at all times or being a slave to my phone. And texting? Far too torturous on my finger. Smartphone functions? A phone's display is too small. I might consider a 7" tablet, but a phone display? My eyesight isn't that good.
And I'm sure there are mobile phones with as high a resolution as my digital camera, but I doubt they have optical zoom.
I'll leave these easily lost or destroyed toys to those of you who favor them.

I bought what I thought was the cheapest option for doing internet lite things a year ago - this faux Blackberry Boost Mobile thing. Keys are tiny as hell and surfing the web is a complete joke. Company pays the monthly bill, but I literally use it maybe a few minutes a week. So... I'm thinking about simply changing over to one of those phones that's $10 (you can actually see the display and buttons too on these models) and something like $15 a month - that's literally all I need. The Boost Mobile/Sprint network *still* sucks and I've been on/off 'em since the late 90's. In fact, NONE of these modern phones are worth a shit as telephones go. Reception and that underwater digital sound is absolutely horrendous to these ears. What? Huh? I spend more time filling in the blanks and pretending I heard what the other person had to say on these silly things. And apps? Pffft.

Cell phones to me are quite offensive and the way people abuse them today is even more so. Sickening how many people have the bloody things. Can't wait for them to become banned due to mental health and cancerous reasons. The asexual nerds of today sure seem to love 'em though!

This is not aimed at you personally, it's just my views on these gawd awful device and the effect they've had on society... :(

While i see why you use one from your post, to me that just sums up society today and the lack of real communication between people these days... :(

Im mean in 47 years I've never got so lost that I would need something like GPS just to find my way home or to a destination where I was heading... :)

Why folk feel the urge to be on the internet when they're out and about or in others company is beyond belief and just plain ignorant... :(

Playing games on a train or plain journeys or any kind of transport where there are other human beings around you to talk to and interact with is again a sad reflection on society these days and just adding to the ever increasing spiral of a society where folk would be better of just staying at home on their own and never venturing out into the real world to experience what life is all about... :(

So your recommendation of everyone buying such a device is really just another sad reflection of the lack of understanding these days that most folk think on what life is all about... sad but unfortunately very true... :(

PS:all this talk of jailbreaking & hacking phones is nothing new, when I was a kid and there were public phone boxes everywhere, we broke/hacked them to get the money out of the coin box... :D

I agree 100% if not more.

The number of times I am on a bus or train and the journey is ruined by prats talking to themselves - well it seems that way until you realise they are shouting into a mobile phone. These people cannot even talk quietly, but have to shout into the bl;oody things.

I just do not see the point of them. Having a phone at home is bad enough, I have to have the dratted BT line for my internet access but could do without the phone itself. ant I certainly do NOT want is people ringing me up when I am ot at home, I leave home to escape the phone. Why people want to carry them around with them is a mystery.

I do wish they would be banned in public places, like libraries buses trains etc. It will happen, people are no longer allowed to kill us with lung cancer so hopefully mobile phones will get the same treatment !

Surely after the invention of email the entire purpose of a phone is now obsolete ?

Bill.

BTW. I don't have a mobile phone, unlikely I ever will either.

We got rid of the home phone a year and a half ago, between mobile phones, skype and the rest the thing was bloody useless, it was tied to one place, charged calls by the distance and kept getting telemarketer calls.  Landlines just have no place in the home.

I voted other, but it was a toss up between other and cheapest. I only use a phone, pretty much as a phone.
I have a Palm that is rather neat - but the only reason I use this is it was FREE.
I really don't like these damned things. I hate the way people use them in public too. To call them rude is an understatement. Cell phones are illegal to use here while driving - but does that stop anyone? I am starting to stray, so I'll cut it off here...

I got an Orange San Francisco (aka ZTE Blade) now, but i'll be getting a Samsung Galaxy S soon hopefully.

My HD2 (Which was running Gingerbread 2.3.3) was stolen recently so I'm using an el-cheapo Blade which is also running 2.3.3 until my contract is due for renewal in September.

Dual-core Tegra based model for me when that time comes methinks. :)

Anyway you can always rip them old copper lines up and flog em to the scrappies... ;)

Yeah, and I bet all those grapes up there are sour, too.

Awesome.  It's always so nice to see the amigoid crowd chime in about how they don't need this newfangled that or the other - and then justify it with (uninformed) comments about the functionality.

I remember when using an Amiga meant having a computer that was cutting edge, ultra high-tech and ran rings around the rest.  Now, if this thread was anything to go by, the sad remainders of the userbase are a bunch of bitter old Luddites who'd prefer the tech world be a more frustrating, slower and harder to use place.

And for the record I have a Samsung Intercept as my sole phone, bill ranges anywhere from $25-$60, depending on what I want to pay Virgin Mobile on any given month.  No contracts, and if it comes down to it I can tether it to my PC and use it as my broadband connection, cutting the $50 Sprint wireless 4g bill out of the budget.

As for the rest?  There's a guy with an Imsai 8080 and paper tape reader who thinks you're all a bunch of effete snobs.

Sums me up perfectly that does... :)

I just need to spend a wee bit more time figuring out how to hack websites and writing viruses for these modern day computers then this old Luddite will really throw a spanner in the works and send us all back to the good old days... :D

I just checked, the ADSL2 I have provides a phone line too.  I'll be buggered what the number is, but apparently there's one.  I'll have to check the phone directory on my iPhone to see if something is listed somewhere.  It was cheaper than my old ADSL alone so I just assumed they weren't going to provide a phone (naked ADSL) number too.

So it's there, it isn't ever going to be used and I don't have an old fashion landline phone left to test it with, so I may never know whether it works or not.

or changing your landline supplier... :)

Or call blocking or ex directory to keep the telemarketers out... :)

PS: if you have no landline how do you connect to the net ???

Get yourself an old landline phone and hook it up... then I'll try calling all the numbers in OZ and see if I can get through to you... :)

Only cost's me 4p a call on my package to phone OZ and their can't be many of you in that barren wasteland that have new fangled things like phones or electricity... :D

I haven't had a land line since 2003 or so, and I only got that because dialup internet was the only thing available where I was living.  In the rare event anyone needs to call me, it's probably an emergency and having a phone ringing miles away from where I am is not helpful.

Generally, though, most of my "phone" usage in the communication sense of the device is for work email.  I also find it useful on long days of Amiga hunting.

I went without a cell phone for a few months and did not miss it too much, but it is convenient to be able to call while traveling without needing to find a pay phone, which are very scarce these days, because everyone else has a cell phone and pay phones don't get used any more.  My car radio has Bluetooth built-in with a nice voice activated contact list and dialer which makes calling while driving a snap.

I am very suprised there are so many people here that are against using cell phones altogether.  They can be annoying at times, but their usefulness far outweighs their annoyance factors.

I have an iPhone3GS that is jail-broken and unlocked so I can use it on any compatible carrier's network and just switch sim cards when traveling to different countries, instead of paying expensive roaming charges.  I don't have a contract and use the cheapest month-to-month plan that T-Mobile offers.  I like the user interface that the iPhone offers and the way the touch screen works so smoothly, plus I like having something to entertain me while I am waiting for a doctor's appointment, or at the DMV, or other similar long waits.

I might even one day install an Amiga emulator on my iPhone to see how well it works.

However you left off an important cool phone the Palm Pre (WebOS) I LOVE my Palm pre. It blows my gf's Blackberry curve away, I think its better than Iphony 4 for reliablity. I've had the phone 2 yrs now and have been able to go online, chat, launch email app and read email and view attachments, view files, and Talk all at the same time with no slowdown. Now I hear HP who acquired Palm is launching Palm pre2 with a tablet device as well running WebOS 2.

Hi,

@Kesa,

I have a portable phone that sort of looks like the Commodore phone, but it has no Commodore emblems or stickers on it. It has all kind of really good Apps that I have not found on any of those wussy modern day phones, I mean this phone is a mans phone all the way down to the spin around dialer.

First App is really neat, if a mugger tries to mug me, I just take the phone out of its cradle and beat the blimey mugger with it.

Second App if the mugger has a gun I just hold on to the phone end and throw the cradle at him, the coiled wire acts like a spring and brings the cradle back to me.

Ringtones -- a little sparse, just goes ding a ling, than repeats.

Coverage area -- it goes a hundred yards with the original extension cord, can go further with upgrades.

Charges -- hey you gets what you pay for with these, but I don't have to worry about peak calling charges.

A lot of ths I agree with. However I not infrequently will spend 6 or so hours in a day on train journeys. It's boring as hell, and I've often thought of getting a laptop or some other portable device would help ease that boredom. As for there being other folk around when Im on these train journeys, sure, but without such a device I havent spoken to them thus far (why would I? I dont know them or care to know them). To be honest I take offense at the suggestion I shouldnt keep myself ammused just because there's people around. I generally dont like people and thats my choice. Who the fuck are you to tell me otherwise ?

And who the *&*^% are you to tell people whether or not they should be interested in having a device that may be unneccessary to them? I like my technology, but a phone isnt something I care much about, minus the ability to talk to people on occasion. What's it to you ? I'm (nor are others who are disinterested) not telling you what you should or shouldnt be interested in.

32 GB iPhone 3 GS.  Very happy with it, especially after jailbreaking it.  No one on the face of the earth enjoys the closed nature of Apple products, but jailbreaking makes the devices a lot nicer to use.  Call quality on it is far from the best, but compared to my last "new" phone (RIM Blackberry Storm), the iPhone is a major upgrade.  Wouldn't wish the Storm on my worst enemy - I found it entirely unusable, it'd lock up/crash just trying to answer a phonecall, lol.

I have the Android phone HTC Magic. Great phone that suits well my needs for GMail and Google Maps. However, the agenda is crap with Google so i still carry my old Palm for that.
I bought the phone with Android 1.6. Then Google has thrown the 2.1 update and it has become slow unfortunately. I may buy a faster HTC Android phone in a few months.

Google for z4root, install and run it, Reboot.
Install ROM Manager from the market and use it to install ClockworkMod Recovery, then use it to download and install a 2.2/2.3 ROM + Google Apps.

It will back up your old ROM so it's safe.

You know what I completely 101% agree with you!  :)

Where I work the amount of time I sit in the canteen having my break with friends but I'm the only one talking, they all wip out their phones and do texting, update facebook profiles and loads of other daft stupid things.

The funniest thing I find is how some relationships seem to be completely done over Facebook or texting now, my friend who date this girl who completely into this stuff keeps wondering what she means and misunderstand text and they dump each other and then get back together all though text without even speaking to each other not EVEN calling. I just find it all very amusing.

Like I say the main feature of my phone is really, taking pictures and using the GPS I'd admit it my sense of direction is not brill.

But here is a perfect example of the power of the phone, I went to help a friend move to a flat, didn't know exactly where his place was but he gave me his postcode, used GPS found his place help him move in, now his phone line was disconnected so went on the internet via 3G found the right number to call, phoned them sorted it out, took a few picture of the place to show to his worried mom to show what the place was like, and left and realised at the end of the day just how god dam useful a smart phone is. See if you use it as a tool it the best electronic tool you can have. This is not even touching all them crazy apps you have now like to work out currency conversion, to translate foreign language, find local local restaurants, check the prices of things etc etc. The thing is to remember to use it just as a tool and not to replace your social life with, which is is what unfortunately a lot of people do.

PS: anyone seen this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h2OfQdYrHRs its translate text on pictures and stuff its crasy, so this means I go to a  foreign restaurant and know what I'm ordering..amazing!
