Title: aros screen resolution?
Post by: prolife on March 30, 2011, 11:54:52 PM
hi all,

i just installed the latest aros on an old ibm laptop. the only problem i have is that the screen resolution is stuck at 1600x1200 or so but it actually only does 1024x768. i can't do a thing in the preferences.:(

Are you using a supported gfx card or VESA modes. If Im not mistaken you're restricted to the resolution you select in AROS Grub if you're using VESA.

i think it's a savage 4 graphics card so it's not supported? ah, i just tried it and the option for 1024x768 is there at boot up and it works but i don't know how to make it default... ah it seems i have no sound. maybe i should move to a pc with a sb rather than the lappy? it seems speedy for a500 games though.

Edit sys:boot/grub/grub.cfg. There is a default=n line in it where n is the number of the option to be used as default. Numbering starts at 0 for the topmost option.

well i like what i see so far. i don't have sound. the chip seems to be a Crystal SoundFusion sb compatible. the blurb says "The system supports Sound Blaster audio applications." is there anything i can try on that? thanks.

I dont think you'll have much luck unfortunately. As far as I know the only sb AROS has are emu10k1 based (sblive, some audigy cards).

Rubbish ;)

I've got AHI to work on most (if not all AC97) sound cards I've tried. You will need to fiddle with the AHI prefs though...

If there's no supported sound card nothing will show up in AHI prefs. Your card isnt supported though. As I mentioned the only SB support AROS has is for emu10k1 based cards.

If Im not mistaken there's some sort of usbsound class for poseidon so in theory it may be possible to use usb sound devices although to my knowledge no drivers exist yet for it (Im sure someone will correct me if Im wrong though).

I think you're right, don't think there is a USB audio class in AROS' Poseidon stack, hence this bounty request:

For those that are interested in getting sound in AROS, other than the cheap Emu10k-based option already hinted at, this is the best HD audio sound card that has been confirmed as working with AROS:

The form factor is not going to be the limiting factor (i.e. choose whichever one you prefer), the thing to look out for is driver support. A popular choice is the Acer Aspire 110/150, as it's cheap and most/all of the hardware has working AROS drivers. There's even a website and a custom distro for AROS on the Acer Aspire:

As for pendrives, you can install AROS to a pendrive, think paolone wrote a guide about how to set this up with Icaros. As long as at least one of your computers has an optical drive you should be fine (and even if you don't have an optical drive in any of your PCs I reckon I could help you install AROS to a pendrive by using a virtual machine).

i have icarus, when i say aros i mean icarus, on the lappy already. i just wish icould have sound! it's only 800mhz so... i have a pc candidate but i also have a netbook. i prefer the netbook idea. it's an msi u135dx. i'm not sure if that's any better for sound options though. i went for this as i wanted xp.
