Title: Best possible output for Amiga screen shots?
Post by: 4ppleseed on July 16, 2007, 02:53:30 PM
I'm hoping to take some quality screen shots of Amiga games and Demos. Could someone advise on the configuration to get the best possible output?

Any tips or tricks to get them as good as possible would be great. Many thanks!

Resoultion?

800 x 600 x 24. This can cover full overlay and hires laced. You can obviously crop the actual graphics after the snapshot.

Filters?

What filters?

ONE OF THE BEST WAYS:

If you have a Digital8 or MiniDV cam with S-Video Input........take the S-VideoJacK (get a genlock with S-Video) and then input it into the camera and press record.or press Snapshot.

This is the best possible FrameGrabber except maybe WinUAE wich I believe grabs the actual frame.

Do Not use TV capture cards on a PC...........thee is nothing in existence crappier than those to capture true representations. Well except maybe DigiView hehehe.

The way I explained is also great for capturing Better than DVD video OUTPUT from the Amiga. YOu can export it through the FireWire on the camera to make an excellent DVD.

If you got a good DVD recorder in the living rom with RGB input it can accept the Amiga's RGB output directly.

Even better than SVideo ;)

Going thru any sort of D/A -> A/D conversion will reduce the quality.

Just use UAE.

Which in most cases will make the picture quality better as it will not look so chunky :)

I have used UAE for getting screenshots long long time ago, DOS version on 486. I remember that if you want 100% exact same colour palette as Amigas, you need to use 24-bit color.
16-bit won't do..
Later you can use 32 indexed colors and save as .png (sometimes 64 IIRC, Photoshop or similar knows how many exactly)
I made 100s of games screenshots that way but it took a lot of time on 486

What kind of RGB inputs would that be?

I am absolutely certain that there were software for the Amiga computer itself that allowed you to save the displayed screen to a file.

(in case using UAE is a problem...)

I think it was called grabbit.

They used it in the magazine Amigotimes to make perfect screen grabs for reviewing various softwares, including games.

Grabit will work with OS friendly applications, but for games and demos UAE is the best bet.  You can also grab on real hardware with system monitors/freezers like AR, HrtMon, etc. on

- you could use whdload and the snoop option

- if you have an A500, you could grab an action replay MKIII and freeze and save the display
