Is it ppssible to install a 64 bit driver on a 32 bit OS?
« on: August 21, 2011, 10:33:40 PM »
While trying to diagnose a video problem on my Windows XP SP3 computer, I was checking the driver versions of all my hardware.  While checking for updates of my sound-card driver (Delta audiophile 192) I saw that the manufacturer listed the driver version that I have installed as being for Windows XP 64-bit computers.

I was surprised at this because I do not have a 64-bit installation of WindowsXP (nor a 64 bit CPU).  Instead I have a 32-bit CPU/installation of Windows and I have been using this driver for over a year without any apparent problems.

There is an older driver listed by the manufactuer as being available for Windows XP 32-bit computers.

...have I done something that could cause me problems by installed a 64-bit driver on a 32-bit system?  I didn't even think it was possible to install a 64 bit driver on a 32 bit system!

Thanks...

No, you can't. Now if the driver is listed as 64bit it will only work on the 64 bit versions of an OS that it is listed as compatible with.

The driver could be listing itself or being recognized as the wrong version.
I'd uninstall it and install a listed compatible version

Nope, only 32 bit drivers will work.  If you need a driver for an HP and can only seem to find a 64 bit version try the 32 bit universal drivers.

Hmmm....I guess that the manufacturer has listed the driver wrongly, since it is clearly working on my 32 bit system.

I have contacted the manufacturer (M-Audio) with this question directly.
