Title: Online Gaming (FPS) with the Amiga.org members
Post by: Calen on September 27, 2003, 05:00:32 PM
OK i got  your attention..

Some of us on the #Amiga.org (http://warpzonebbs.com/cgi-bin/cgiirc/irc.cgi) IRC channel have played a few times online against each other on some of the more popular FPS in the Win/linux market,  ok it was mostly Q3A demo which kinda sucked but its what most of us could get are hands on at the time,  but it was fun all the same.

Anyway, i thought it be kinda cool if you could vote on what you do play online in the pick of FPS out there and maybe we could all meet up once a week or so and kick each others arse.  We would  probably have to use public servers as private costs money and i dont know of anyone who has the bandwidth to host online games for alot of players for us for free :-)

Some choices of games could be UT, MOHAA, ET and things like that.

it's just an early  idea so feel free to kick some ideas about.

Feel free also to move this to talk about if you feel it's better suited.

Interesting idea, /me kicka your a$$ on Q3A though mang.

Don't have much here except for demos and games that are a few years old, but willing to pay 50 some bucks for a new game (been long enough)

I have allways been a succer for "Soldier of Fortune". I have not tried SOF2 though ...

But I like C&C type of games better, like Red Allert 2, and my alltime (now quite old) favourite - StarCraft!

I think Day of Defeat would be cool. I get very good pings even on servers in the UK or US  :-) . Oh yeah and it is cheap

Think of it like this,  it's a much better way of taking your frustrations out that builds up inside when people post those posts that up the blood pressure   :-D
Keep the boards clean, take it out on the battlefield  ;-)  :destroy:

Wouldn't games that run on an Amiga be a better choice for an Amiga-themed channel?
Title: Re: Online Gaming (FPS) with the Amiga.org members
Post by: SlimJim on September 27, 2003, 05:34:40 PM
@KennyR

Quake is really quite a boring game, in my book ... I would love
Genetic Species or Payback to be online multiplayer, but alas ...

Quake II should work I suppose. Heretic II and Shogo
perhaps. But I would have to run that on my PC anyhow,
since my Amiga isn't up for it.

All I can think of. Any other suggetions?

Of course but the majority who come here have access to a PC capable of running FPS and they are quite popular.

When OS4 comes, i will be very interested in that myself :-)
It could bring the Red and Blue teams to a whole new level ;-)

My favourite on-line FPS is Natural Selection. Since it's a Half-Life mod it's cheap and doesn't need the latest hardware to run. So that's my suggestion.

ET is a nice alternative too, as it's free and available for both Windows and Linux, although demanding more from the hardware.

You could try this .

The Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory FREE stand alone multiplayer game has been released to the world! It's fun, addicting and full of Wolf love! You don't need RtCW to play ET. What you need is what you download!

download from here http://www.planetwolfenstein.com/files/files.shtml (http://www.planetwolfenstein.com/files/files.shtml)

i agree with kennyr  , this aint a pc world!

quake , quake 2 , freespace , heretic2 , shogo , battle duel , netris , dukenukem  3d (soon) , doom 1, doom2 , final doom , hexen , heretic , napalm (yes there is a net patch :) , tales of tamar , eat the whistle ...there are some more games ...but i forgot which..

lets have a BIG duel in this ...

and later on..lets get UAE kalliera and play with that on some real AMIGA classic games :)

people who mention non amiga games should get a foot in their butt for now :)

cheers

Most of the games you mention either need PPC hardware or a powerfull spec Amiga, not many Amiga users have this Yet who visit here, this should hopefully change

And yes this is an Amiga board, does that mean we can't play them games as we wouldnt be playing them on Amiga? i browse this site without an Amiga to.

I'm all for playing them games mentioned online if thats what most people go for and when i ever get h/w to deal with broadband for my PPC Amiga, but in the meantime the majority will go with what they have for capable FPS, a cheap win/linux machine.

Those FPS you mentioned i do hope to play online via OS4 on AmigaOne when the time comes, can't wait  :-)

What a cool idea. Make clan wars, red vs blue camp :) That would be awesome. Losers have to give up trolling for one week, until the next match :)

Sincerely,

Speaking of kalliera, i have recently been using that to play Sega Megadrive/Genesis games online (Golden Axe and Streets of rage mostly) and it really is great playing those school day games online  as Sega never intended   :-)

How about HBMonopoly or Freeciv? Those are usable on almost all Amigas.

Also, where is this legendary netpatch for Napalm? I thought
clickBOOM never got around to it...

Easy frag-tip:
Use the MG-42 and place yourself in the tunnel (at a safe distance from the grates, you don't want to be blown into oblivion by the tank) on the "Fuel dump"-map.
Happy fragging! :-P

For another big download America's Army: Operations and Soldiers (http://www.nvidia.com/object/games_army.html) It's free and it's not bad at all, takes a while to download tho... And no, it's not only for GeForce cards..

Why it must be a FSP? :-(

Why not something like dynAMIte? Runs well on AmigaOS, MorphOS probably on Amithlon and WinUAE too. I whould join a dynAMIte round! :-)

I think the biggest reason is lag though, atleast i hope so.  ;-)

I cannot get better than 250ms ping time on ET with my cable"1120/384kbit", usually its 250-500ms.. Sometimes i can even empty the whole magasine on someone, without killing someone..

Luckily i will get adsl 3000/704 on the 10th of october... Then i will see if it is just my skills or lag  :-D

All I have to say is:

Half Life - Counter Strike

YES! Game that defeats all. Unreal Tournament or Quake III are fun too. I would like to play QIII over unreal tournament. But if it has to be any game, let it be CounterStrike. :-D

Hello there!

This is the best post I have seen these days!
OK, let me get to the point, I can make a gaming server easily, since I'm on  a fast connection, but I have only a couple of games and that is: Quake, Quake II, Quake III, UT, Civilization 3, Alien versus Predator 2, C&C Generals, Operation Flashpoint, Total Annihilation, America's Army and that's it. I also have Half-Life somewhere, but I can't find it right now. If HL is that important, I'll check with my bro for a CD. Since lot of ppl don't have high-end platforms, we can set some kind of voting or something and choose a game.
I'm terribly sorry to say that I can't host Amiga game, and if you guys want an Amiga game, I can't help in that case. But I would love to kick some asses in Q3 :))), or any other game. ;)

If everything is fine, tell me what do you think about this, and let's cut the crap and start some serious gaming :)

best regards,

levelLORD

There is but one game worth playing online:

The Wake Island multiplayer demo is a wicked map, plus it's free!!! They also have the new Secret Weapons multiplayer demo out now too, but Wake is better.

Oh, and btw, I'll kick your asses!

Sounds like a good offer, I'm all for UT from your list as it's the only game i have from it. :-)
Don't forget Enemy Territory (http://www.enemy-territory.com/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=viewdownload&cid=2) is Free and MoHAA should not be missed by any FPS fan, it's a must.

Keep em coming :-)

OK from what I have i seen so far, these seem to be the most popular in choices of  "FPS"

Enemy Territory
UT
Q3A
MOHAA
BattleField 1942
HalfLife/CS (ewww)
Americas Army

OK i have left out a few but they seem to be what most are going with.
If other popular "FPS"  get Alot of interest i will add them to the list before i submit it to the Poll thread on which we can all vote on, if Kees gives it the OK to setup poll for that is.

Then hopefully we can take levelLORD up on his kind  offer if he has the games with the most votes ;-)

YEESS! Count me in!

... as soon as i get my Geforce back, that is. Shouldn't be long, though, I got a mail thursday saying they had swapped the old one (it was broken) and they'd be sending a new one ASAP .... whenever that is :-|

Also, I had a bit of fun earlier tonight with the Q3A demo. Although it's not really my kind of game, it's the only thing that will run properly on the onboard gfx crap I'm using ATM.

I'm downloading Enemy Territory and Battlefield 1942 Demo right now, so we can count these also. Never tried ET, but Battlefield rocks., I was having soo many hours of fun with that gem. Still, on a slower machine, it will just crawl, and I'm not sure is that a good choice. Anyways, I got Half-Life CD today, and only game I don't have from the list is MOHAA.

NP, it will be my pleasure ;) I'm really looking forward for this and hopefully it is going to happen as soon as possible, and there will be more than 3-4 people who are willing to play.

OK cool :-)  I will add the games i listed to the poll thread probably within the next 48 hours or so to give peeps a little more time in case some other gems get noted heavily.

Hopefully not to long after, the poll will be active and  the games can begin :-)

I'm of to bed....
