Title: AmigaOS 4.1 Update 6 + Pegasos II G4 1GHz
Post by: Lurch on May 22, 2014, 11:30:23 PM
Well after a few hours of trying to get it to boot from the HDD and then figuring out you don't need the 4.1 disc just 4.1.1 and doing a fresh install with it. It's booting :-)

Took two different howtos and reading the PegII manual a couple of times, in the end I just kept decreasing the boot partition in size until it would boot from it. Anything under 25MB works, tried to make it smaller but this is painful using media toolbox. However doesn't matter it's booting and I'm using a 250GB HDD ;-)

First impressions is that 4.1 update 6 is gorgeous, right down to the mouse pointer. It's very quick and snappy. The screen looks very crisp and unlike 4.1 it's starting to look like a modern OS. Without update 1 or higher I was also getting graphic corruption, as soon as update 1 went on wow, big change.

The new boot screen from update 3 or 4 onwards looks 100% better, more now than 80's/90's.

Navigating around is just like AmigaOS 3.9. Actually it's pretty close to my AmigsOS 3.9 setup on my A1200, right down to my OS4.1 theme ;-)

It's very stable, a lot more stable than 3.9. Also the user-startup/startup-sequence only has a few lines compared to all the patches I need to run under 3.9.

However when you start digging there are similar/same issues as 3.9. Try extracting multiple files in Diropus i.e. WHDLoad packs and navigation slows to a crawl, just sit back and watch the Diropus progress bar. Multitasking at this point is a no go ;-)

However other than the above I could switch screens fine, I think this comes back to the out dated filesystems in use.

MiniGL/Warp works really well and the demos that come with it run with no issues and surprisingly quick. However I downloaded openarena from os4depot and even at 640x480 there is a hint of lag. Plus the jaggies argh terrible.

The ATI 9200 I know is a far more capable card than that. Doesn't really bode well but will post again when I try some more games.

Will try Quake1 and Quake2 next, will be interesting to see as on my A1200 I can play both at 640x480 with warp3d/minigl at very playable speeds (and no jaggies) on a Voodoo 5 5500.

Ghouls and Ghosts remix, even in the tiny default screen it feels laggy. Nothing really complicated about it, tried to run at full screen same performance. Something not right there.

Runinuae, with all the updates installed this makes playing WHDLoad games a breeze, however it goes to a WB3.1 and when you quit out of the WHDLoad game it dumps you back in the WB3.1 not exiting right back to OS4. Of course after some further reading I have to hit a combination of keys to exit WB3.1.

Will be testing igame next as browsing through 1000 odd folders is still just as painful as 3.9.

Web browsing, ibrowse works great very quick. Of course as it's the same version as 3.9 it still can't render some pages correctly. But it works except for the same issue I had with java under 3.9 with time outs etc.

OWB pages look better and seems to be snappy performance wise.

Timberwolf, crashes and the loading bar gets stuck at 25%ish.

Will keep playing around with it :-)

This is quite good, 4.1 in a browser :-)

Thing to note don't put too many files on a USB stick and expect AmigaOS 4.1 to read it. Solid lockup LOL.

More to come :-/

Downloaded the official Cinemaware pack, thought I might get a quick game of it came from the desert.

But no first the grim reaper comes up crashing on the catweasel driver, found that I had to remove it and that it's a known fault. Then the kickstart ROM it needs to run doesn't appear to be included with AmigaOS4 or any of the updates/Amiupdate.

Good think I am amigaforever user, downside is it's a digital copy so will have to get it off my laptop.

Double click and run, yeah right.

Quake 2 runs really well at 1024x768, downside is the sound is crackling so will have to sort that problem out.

I think for a modern OS to succeed is for 95% of things need to run smoothly. Not a constant battle or struggle to try and get something basic as a game to run.

The other fun part is trying to guess what is needed for a game/program to run. The hunt using google through various forums use to be fun but not anymore.

If a game needs a certain program/library/kickstart installed to run it should come with it.

Quake 2 up and running looks really good and is quick at 640x480. I get cracking sound however, just appears to be in Quake 2.

Don't install any of the Pegasos updates either, they just nuke your install. LOL

The Catweasel driver is my fault, sorry :) But that bug was fixed ages ago, and I thought a corrected versions was also rolled out to the users shortly after it was found?
If you don't have a Catweasel just delete it. If you do, use it with your old Amiga joysticks in UAE for added awesome. :)

Hi Spirantho, it appears after update 6 goes on. I ended up deleting it :-)

Amiupdate has some quirks too, had to copy over an update library from the amiupdate page. Even then it errors with the mixer update etc. So manually had to tweak that.

Just working on the crackling sound probem with just Quake2....

must be a Peg II issue then as I had no problems at all with my old Samflex@800 board and now also with my X1000.

Tested under MorphOS no issues with USB. So it's AmigaOS at fault.   :-)

Me neither to be honest, I'm on a Sam-flex.

No problem, just just good to have some talk about OS4. :-)

Reloaded my Peg II again, this time using a IDE to SATA adapter and using an Intel 160GB SSD as the main boot drive.

Flying along now, have a SATA PCI card coming that I'll try connecting the DVDRW to, if not I have another IDE to SATA adapter that will work with it.

Received another 1GB DDR RAM stick which stops the PegII from booting, even on it's own. Reading some posts on the PPC forums they recommend using pair sets especially Kingston HyperX KHX3200AK2/2G.

Currently has a 1GB model 184dr1gb468 which works great, but can only find that model for sale on sites I don't feel confident purchasing from :-/

Still have sound card issues with the onboard and SB Live in some games not all.

Tried an external self powered USB 160GB drive had to connect both USB connectors but it eventually was detected. NTFS works great now with the latest FUSE update through Amiupdate.

Going to format the troublesome 8GB USB stick and try it again.

Now just need to work out to do the following:

"The interrupt of the card must be set to 'Level' in
the U-Boot menu."

Which is mentioned in the SB Live AHI drivers. :-/

there's an active list of USB devices working with OS4.1 update 6 here:http://www.amigans.net/modules/xforum/viewtopic.php?start=0&topic_id=3532&viewmode=&order=ASC&type=&mode=0

Now RunInUAE joystick fun time. Games work great just like being on the real thing.

BUT, joysticks are a nightmare. I have two Competition Pro USB joysticks from my x86 setup.

Plugged them in and went through Amigainput and calibrated them. Assigned the low level device/buttons/x and y axis.

The assigned the joystick, shared settings and then default joystick.

Loaded a game to test (Dr Who) and yippie the fire button works. Started the game and the Dr kept on wanting to go left, firing wasn't an issue.

Quit out and tried a couple more games all pulling left.

The saga continues :-)

Amigainput is very buggy, will lockup and cause the grimreaper to appear...

Might see if there is a way of resetting it.

So fiddling around with the calibration screen and now it takes off to the right.

So it looks like an issue how Amigainput calibrates the joystick.

Will keep playing :-/

Sorted the calibration thing out, the competition pro seems to be really sensitive under OS4.

Smoking Guns - Well installed out then I had to find a missing library. As with anything Amiga this is a hard task. Eventually downloaded from Aminet dev/lib/libbz2.lha then renamed it to libz.so.1 and put it in the SObjs folder. Now loads fine.
Once in the game the most I can achieve is 11-13 FPS then when a couple of bots appear it drops down to 2-3 FPS and becomes unplayable. Even after turning off all the features and dropping the resolution down. Deleted Smoking Guns.

Next....

Urban Terror, as per Smoking guns I forgot to mention you need to download the libboostygfx library.
Once that was sorted went to load it, bamn comes up with couldn't load default.cfg.
So thinking this is a Quake3 based game it uses the same config file. Copied this over and tried again, still same issue.
Moved on to the next game...
Zelda Solarus DX, works great but can't get it to go full screen. stuck with a tiny window. Plus it's in another language.
Super Mario War - Great little game, feels like the retro Mario but couldn't get into it.
1941dx dual - This isn't a bad game and runs okay, and at full screen. But prefer the original 1941. Picked up on two joysticks and seem to work as intended.
MiniSlug-OS4 - Really enjoying it, even down to the scanlines :-) But I wish I could make it full screen :-/
Reminisence - Flashback engine, still on the hunt for some data files.
BeatsofRage - Same deal, still looking for the data files.

LinCity NG - this is quite addictive, a shame it runs like a dog. even at 640x480. :-/ I would rate it right up there with Sim City, maybe even a little better :-)

The best util I've come across so far is eGame it is fantastic. I even donated some money to get the key for it.
I would say it was as good as if not better than igame. The only thing I'd want to add is the option to add entire folders of games like in the case of WHDLoad. Other than that you must get this util :-)

Urbanterror - now I get the ID logo then it goes to a black screen. So I guess that's progress. Don't think I'll waste anymore time on it as there are plenty of forum posts mentioning the same issue.

Decided to try Nicky Boum today from os4 depot. So it states it needs data files from the original DOS version and some from the project web page.

So downloaded the DOS version and the PPC exe and put it together, went to the project page... page is gone. :-/

Nevermind next...
