Maybe my memory is due to most of my friends games being cracked :)

I hate the whole loading times and dodgy tape talk of today.
It was very rare for an original tape to fail loading unless it was on the Spectrum or Acorn Electron.
The C64's datasette helped prevent load errors as they were usually caused by incorrect volume settings. There was just as many disc read errors from dodgy disks or drives.

Loading times were also not as long as people think. True there were some games that had stupid load times but then developers started to add turbo load features and multiload features.
People also forget that you had some great music while the games were loading and sometimes a game to play (Invade-a-Load). Both things I miss when using an emulator.

Having had a C128 and a Spectrum 48K I can tell you I never had a Specy tape that failed.  Agree most people's issue was because the Specy alowed you to use any cassette recorder and people did.  Even now (yes I have 2) you need to have an MP3 Player with a high mw outage.  Old iPods work well.
I have never had "knock on wood" a 1541 Disk failure.  Nooo! keep those magnets away...
Also the Specy was about 4 times faster in loading standard games than a non turbo C64. 4 mins vs 16mins for full 38K game.
On the bright side the C64s GFX and Sound swamped the Specky with it's 8x8 Colour attrubutes and pokey sound.  But the Specy was soooo easy to program.
Ooooh I got all retro again and off topic... Sorry...

I don't emulate classics I use them.....:)

Deluxe Galaga for the Amiga is great, but it's still not Galaga. Still has this "homebrew" feel to it that's tough to shake.

Huh? Deluxe Galaga is one of the most polished games in the genre, I really don't know where you get that homebrew feel from?

=Controller;630561]I think that the C64 version of the game Barbarian was really cool. I  spent at great deal of time trying to chop off the other fighters head  :-)
Me too. :)

My list (whatever I can think of now)

Already mentioned:
Wizball (Smoother, and better audio on C64)

Eliminator (At least music is way better on C64)
Outrun (I think at least music was better, not sure about playability)
Atomino (C64 ingame music is SO much better...)
LED Storm (smoother scrolling + parallax on C64, way better musics... Personally I consider the C64 version the best available, better than original arcade version)
Laser Squad (almost identical otherwise (amiga has slightly improved graphics) but there are extra scenarios for C64)
Kikstart 2 (Got some vague memories about this being much worse, but can't remember exactly how)
Last Ninja series (overall better musics on C64)

+ 1, Deluxe Galaga & Deluxe Galaga AGA are outstanding vertical shooters that IMHO are leaps & bounds better than the original Galaga on the C64

buy a real C64 and some old non turbo games and see for yourself... :)

I got my c64 in christmas of 1984, I don't remember any games that came out after that which used the kernal tape loader. It was cheaper to license a loader than it was to buy the long tapes.

Having had a C128 and a Spectrum 48K I can tell you I never had a Specy tape that failed.

Now that's impressive. I wasn't nearly as lucky, although my speccy-related failures were all down to +2A incompatibilities, even in 48k mode, perfectly good software would crash after loading.

As for the OP's question. I still say C=64 Paradroid was a far better game than Amiga Paradroid '90. (Or does that count as a sequel?)

The one I just can't believe no one has mentioned....

HARDBALL!

C64 version was so awesome.  Amiga version wasn't bad, but just never really captured what made the C64 one great.

And I totally agree, all the Epyx "Games" series were way better on C64.  Summer Games, California Games, etc.

Also, agreed: Airborne Ranger may earn the title of Worst Port Ever!  :D  Wow, did the Amiga version suck.

Operation Wolf, Turbo Outrun and Airborne Ranger. Everything.

Operation wolf can be struck off the list.  Approx 3min 30 seconds

A Typical Ocean Game took about 4 mins

and a US Gold game cold take about 2 mins
USGold Nova Load  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=phLzHizznSg

A mastertronic game would sometimes allow you to play another game while you wait to play the game your loading (and that would last about 2 mins)
