Title: C64 stuff
Post by: Matt_H on October 31, 2015, 03:35:20 AM
After many years of being C64-less I finally got a new one! Well, new to me, anyway.

Since I know we have a number of C64 users here, I thought I'd ask about any recommended add-ons. I've come across a few nifty developments from the past few years - SD2IEC, Jens' upcoming Chameleon, datasette replacements using a regular audio input jack.

Anything else I should take a look at?

Thanks!

Heatsink the VIC, SID, and PLA chips, install JiffyDOS, and most important of all, get a C64 heavy-duty power supply, like the one sold by Ray Carlsen.

this comparison might shed some light on it:

The problem with the ultimate 1541 II it doesn't appear to be made anymore. Was looking for something like that but gave up.

I've had a Chameleon for years and I love it.  I have it plugged into a C64C, VGA out to an LCD monitor, a real floppy attached for when I don't want to use D64 files on the SD card.  Oh, and the Amiga module too.  I always love to show people how to play Amiga games on a C64.  :D

Thanks all. Can the 1541 Ultimate, Chameleon, or similar devices defeat copy protection? In other words, can I just connect my stock 1541 drive and back up my old commercial programs to .d64 files? I've seen other devices that allow you to connect a 1541 to a computer over USB or parallel, but you need to replace some chips or add new cables on the 1541 to bypass copy protection.

Or alternatively, is there a C64 equivalent repository to SPS that I can check to make sure *someone* has safely archived (stock versions of) all my old software?

Much of the tosec and caps stuff is probably pal software, but check out the CSDB for many cracks of software. you may find all of your stuff in these collections.

if you cant get a 1541U2 then follow robertB's suggestions for jiffydos etc,

I have something in the back of my C64 that runs it at 4x speed, and has high speed DOS as well. Don't remember the name of it.

Sounds like a Schnedler Turbo Master CPU 4.09 MHz accelerator cartridge.

Yes, the Turbo Master has a type of DOS that works at 4 MHz. and 1 MHz. (whichever you select on the DIP switch).

Mine is somewhere in a box,

Defeating most copy protection of original games is mostly a software thing, doesn't matter much about which cartridge you have, get a board with a network interface and you can warp backup disks over the network to your PC.

I have had a 1541U-I, good bit of kit, but Gideon basically dropped support for it when the 1541U-II was out.  I have a Chameleon now and it is awesome!  Lots of support and it can be a C64, Amiga, Spectrum, Amstrad, MSX, Atari and a bunch of other systems as well :-)

There are a few sites that have originals preserved, some let you download, some don't .. same goes for the manuals for games and software.  Sorry not got links to hand tight now, quick google will show all!

Probably this Epyx Reloaded Cartridge (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Epyx-Fastload-RELOADED-Disk-SD2IEC-Turbo-loader-Cartridge-C64-C128-C128d-/231234436426?hash=item35d6a57d4a:g:SFEAAOSw2s1UxXdx) (not my auction). I've bought one of these to complement my SD2IEC since it includes JiffyDOS and gives the C64 a reset button, does what it says on the tin!

There are loads of new cartridges that work on the old Epyx Fast Load idea. I have one called FreeLoad that sold for a whopping $7.00 (USD) without a case. I don't know if they are still being made though.
There are some ideas for C-64 users on :

And also on:

Robertb can suggest many 8 bit sites too.
